VW Bora Belt Tensioner Failure Causing Engine Issues
Summary of the thread
The conversation centers around a belt tensioner issue in a 2005 VW Bora 2.0, where the belt started making a squealing noise during cold starts, and the engine noise increased during acceleration. The problem is identified as a likely failing belt tensioner assembly, with a loose tensioner pulley potentially causing improper belt tension. Suggested solutions include replacing the belt tensioner unit, installing a new drive belt, and inspecting the entire belt drive system, including the idler pulley and other components, to prevent further engine damage. The estimated repair cost is between 400-500€.

Last service was at 119000km and I can confirm the squealing noise started about 3 weeks ago. The timing belt was replaced at 90000km as part of scheduled automobile maintenance. The engine performance feels normal except for the increasing noise during acceleration. No check engine light so far. After reading your reply, I am getting worried about potential damage to other components. The belt tensioner on my Bora definitely shows similar symptoms to what you described. I will schedule a workshop visit this week to have the tensioner pulley and belt drive checked before it gets worse.

Good to hear you're taking action on the belt tensioner issue. When my Golf had this problem, the serpentine belt started showing signs of wear on the edges due to misalignment from the failing tensioner. The workshop should check both the belt tensioner and idler pulley, since worn bearings in either can cause similar symptoms. With your mileage, it's also worth inspecting the entire belt drive system including all accessory pulleys. Based on the timing of your last belt replacement at 90000km, the current issues are likely isolated to the belt tensioner assembly and not related to the timing belt service. Still, having them verify proper timing belt tension during the inspection is worthwhile. My repair was completed in about 2 hours and has been trouble-free for 40000km since. The belt drive now runs smoothly with no noise, even during cold starts. Expect parts and labor to cost between 400-500€ depending on which components need replacement. Getting it fixed now will prevent more expensive repairs later.

Thanks for sharing those details. Your description helps confirm my suspicions about the belt tensioner. My Bora is indeed showing the exact same symptoms you experienced with your Golf. The increasing engine noise during acceleration really has me concerned. Looking at the service intervals, its good to know this is likely separate from the timing belt work done at 90000km. The quick 3-week progression of the squealing noise matches what you described about potential tensioner pulley failure. I have booked the car in for next Tuesday and asked them to inspect the complete belt drive system including the idler pulley and other components. The 400-500€ estimate helps set realistic expectations for the repair costs. Would rather sort this now than risk further engine damage or having the belt fail while driving. Will update the thread once I know what parts needed replacement and if it resolves both the cold start squeal and acceleration noise issues.

I had almost the exact same issue with my 2003 VW Golf 2.0, so I can share my experience as someone with moderate car maintenance knowledge. The squealing noise during cold starts is a classic symptom of belt tensioner problems. When I noticed similar issues with engine noise and belt drive performance, I took immediate action since these components are crucial for proper engine performance. The workshop diagnosed a failing belt tensioner assembly. They found the bearing in the tensioner pulley had worn out, causing improper tension on the belt. The repair involved: Replacing the complete belt tensioner unit, Installing a new drive belt, Checking other pulleys for wear, Testing belt alignment and tension Total cost was 455€ for parts and labor. The repair resolved both the squealing and the engine noise issues completely. To better assist with your specific case, could you share: Current mileage on your Bora, How long has the squealing noise been present, Whether you notice any change in engine performance, If the Check Engine light has come on These belt drive system issues should be addressed promptly to prevent potential damage to other engine components or belt failure while driving.
