Thanks for sharing your Golf experience. Your symptoms match mine perfectly. Its really helpful knowing the clutch switch failure triggered all those electrical faults in your case too. Currently weighing if I should attempt the repair myself given the gear selector and other electrical issues. Since moisture seems to be a common culprit with these faulty switches, I wonder if thats what caused mine to fail. Could you remember roughly what you paid for the complete fix? Also curious if any other electrical faults popped up since the switch replacement?

Glad I could help identify the clutch switch issue. Just had the repair completed last week actually. The electrical fault and car stalling problems are completely resolved now. The mechanic confirmed the faulty switch was causing all those strange electrical symptoms. When they examined the clutch pedal assembly, they found a damaged cable connection that was letting moisture affect the switch contacts. Total cost came to 95€ for fixing the connection and testing all systems. Much cheaper than I initially feared. Since the repair, everything works perfectly, gear display, cruise control, and starting are all back to normal with no new electrical faults appearing. The clutch pedal now has the proper engagement feel too, which I hadnt even realized was slightly off before. Really shows how one faulty switch can cascade into multiple electrical issues in these cars. If youre still debating DIY vs professional repair, I definitely recommend having a shop handle it given all the related systems involved. The diagnostic equipment they used to verify the fix was crucial.

Appreciate all the helpful replies. Just got back from the mechanic and wanted to share how it went for others who might face similar issues. Took it to a different shop this time. The technician immediately recognized the symptoms and confirmed the faulty clutch switch diagnosis. They found the safety mechanism was indeed triggered by a corroded switch connection. The repair was straightforward, new switch installation and thorough testing of the gear selector and other electrical systems. Bill came to 120€ including parts and labor. More than your repair but still reasonable considering all the testing they did. Everything works perfectly now. The clutch pedal feels more responsive, cruise control is back online, and the gear display is fully functional. No error codes since the fix. Good call on getting it professionally done, they had specialized diagnostic tools that would have been hard to replicate at home. Plus they found some early wear on the wiring that could have caused problems later.

Had a similar ignition problem on a VW Golf (2004, 2.0L gasoline). The clutch switch failure created nearly identical symptoms, no start condition, cruise control deactivation, and electrical gremlins. The safety mechanism relies on the clutch switch signal to allow starting. When the switch fails, the car computer thinks the clutch pedal is not depressed, preventing start-up as a safety feature. At the garage, diagnosis revealed corroded terminals at the clutch switch connector. The faulty switch itself had moisture damage internally. Required full replacement of the switch assembly and cleaning of the wiring connector. Not a serious repair job, but precision is crucial since its tied to multiple vehicle systems. DIY is possible if you can access the connector behind the pedal assembly, but improper installation can cause persistent electrical issues. The repair involves: Removing lower dash panel, Locating switch at clutch pedal, Disconnecting electrical connector, Replacing switch unit, Testing proper engagement Professional installation ensures proper adjustment and function testing across all affected systems.
