VW Bora Heater Valve Failure Causing No Heat Output

Last service was at 33000km and included a coolant flush. No coolant loss that I can see, and the temperature gauge reads normal. No sweet smells noticed in the cabin. The engine isnt overheating either. After reading through the responses, I suspect its indeed the heater control valve causing valve blockage issues. When the heat is on max, I can faintly hear clicking from behind the dash, which seems to match what others describe with faulty valves. The engine coolant levels are good and circulation seems normal based on hose temperatures. However, the heater core input and output pipes show minimal temperature difference, suggesting the valve might not be opening properly. Ill get it checked this week. From what others paid, expecting around 150€ for the repair if its just the valve.

Thanks for the additional details about your Bora. The clicking sound behind the dash combined with the minimal temperature difference between heater core pipes definitely points toward a car valve issue, just like what happened with my Golf. The good news is that with normal coolant levels and no leaks, we can likely rule out more serious engine coolant problems. My valve replacement actually resolved a similar clicking noise entirely. The automotive valve system in these VW models from that era is pretty straightforward to work on. A valve blockage check might be worth doing while they have it open. When they replaced mine, they found some debris restricting movement, which explained the poor operation. The total repair should stay around your 150€ estimate, assuming no other issues are found. One tip: make sure they check the electrical connector at the valve too. Sometimes corrosion there can cause similar symptoms, and cleaning the contacts might save you the cost of a full valve replacement.

Thanks for confirming those details about the coolant system. Since theres no coolant leak, normal temperature readings, and no sweet smell, Im feeling more confident its the heater valve setup. That clicking sound from the dash really matches what others described with faulty control valves. The minimal temperature difference between the heater core pipes pretty much confirms the valve isnt operating correctly, likely due to valve blockage. The fact that the engine coolant circulation seems normal based on hose temperatures is reassuring, rules out bigger problems. Looking at the repair costs others shared, 150€ seems reasonable if its just the valve that needs replacing. Ill schedule the repair this week. Having read through everyones experiences, Ill ask them to inspect the electrical connections too since that could be a cheaper fix. Really appreciate all the detailed responses and troubleshooting tips. Will update once its fixed in case someone else runs into similar car heating issues.

As someone with some hands-on experience working on VWs, I had a similar issue with my 2003 Golf 1.6, which shares many components with the Bora. The symptoms you describe match exactly what I experienced, poor car heating and related fault codes. Initially I was worried about a heater core failure, which would have been much more expensive. After taking it to my regular workshop, they found the culprit was a faulty cable connection to the heater control valve. The total repair came to 95€, including diagnostics and labor. They had to remove some trim pieces to access the connection, but the whole job took under 2 hours. Before you proceed with repairs, could you share: Are you losing any engine coolant? Does the temperature gauge work normally? Have you noticed any sweet smell inside the car? This information would help determine if your cooling system has other issues that need addressing. Sometimes these heating problems can be connected to coolant leaks or circulation issues that need fixing first. The relatively quick fix in my case was a relief, as I was also dealing with it during cold weather. But its important to get a proper diagnosis since similar symptoms can have different causes depending on the specific model and condition.
