VW Caddy ABS Warning with Heavy Steering Problems

My VW Caddy 2006 (gasoline) suddenly started showing multiple warning signs while driving. The ABS light came on, accompanied by heavy steering wheel vibration and noticeably harder steering. I initially thought it might be related to a flat tire or tire pressure loss since I got a low tire warning recently, but Im not entirely sure. The steering feels particularly concerning. Has anyone experienced a similar combination of symptoms? Im especially interested in hearing what the actual problem turned out to be and how your repair shop fixed it. The car was running perfectly fine until these issues appeared together. Any insights would be helpful before I take it to a workshop.

Having some experience with VWs, I encountered almost identical symptoms on my VW Golf 2004 gasoline model last winter. The combination of ABS warning, steering issues and tire warnings usually points to a tire pressure monitoring system problem. In my case, a faulty tire sensor in the front right wheel was triggering false readings, causing the ABS system to incorrectly engage. The tire gauge showed normal pressure, but the system kept reporting issues. After checking for a punctured tire and finding no air leak, the workshop discovered the valve was defective and needed replacement. The total repair cost was 280€, which included: Diagnostic check, Valve replacement, System recalibration, New tire sensor installation To better assist with your specific case, could you share: Which tires are showing low pressure warnings? Are your inflated tires showing correct pressure when manually checked? Does the steering feel harder at specific speeds or all the time? Have you noticed any unusual tire wear patterns? These details would help determine if youre dealing with the same underlying issue or if theres something else going on with your Caddy.

Thanks for sharing that experience. Just checked my Caddy since posting (30180km on the clock) and found something interesting. When I manually checked the tire pressure, all tires actually showed normal readings despite the warning light. The steering gets notably harder above 60kmh, and the vibration seems to match the wheel rotation speed. The front right tire shows slightly uneven wear on the outer edge compared to the others, though no visible damage or obvious air leak. Still getting intermittent low tire warnings even after reinflating all tires to recommended pressure. Based on your similar experience, Im starting to suspect its indeed a sensor issue rather than an actual tire problem. Will have the workshop check the tire pressure monitoring system and sensors. Would be a relief if its just a faulty valve like in your case. The car is due for service anyway, so good timing to get everything looked at.

Thanks for the additional details about your Caddy. Those symptoms really do mirror what I experienced with my Golf, especially the speed-dependent steering issues and the false tire pressure warnings. The uneven wear on your front right tire, combined with the intermittent tire monitoring alerts despite normal manual pressure readings, strongly suggests a faulty tire sensor setup. In my Golf, the failing sensor would trigger unusual ABS interventions, which explained the steering wheel vibrations increasing with speed. My repair actually revealed two issues: Primary problem: Failed tire sensor causing system confusion, Secondary issue: The constant false ABS activation had stressed the wheel bearing Final repair costs were higher than initially quoted at 420€ total because they had to replace both components. Worth checking your wheel bearing while theyre at it, as these symptoms can cause premature wear. One tip from my experience: Make sure they perform a complete tire monitoring system reset after repairs. My warnings initially came back until they did a proper recalibration of all sensors. Let us know what the workshop finds. Given the matching symptoms, Im betting youll find similar root causes to what I encountered.

Thanks for the input. Just got back from the workshop with the final diagnosis and repair report. Turns out it was indeed very similar to what was described. The tire monitoring system was malfunctioning due to a corroded sensor in the front right wheel, causing false low tire warnings. They also found the wheel bearing had started to wear, explaining the speed-related vibrations and steering issues. The constant false ABS activation apparently contributed to the bearing wear. Total repair came to 395€ covering: New tire pressure sensor, Wheel bearing replacement, Full system diagnostics, Sensor recalibration Everything is working perfectly now. No more ABS lights, steering is smooth again, and the tire pressure monitoring system is giving accurate readings. Really glad I checked here first as it helped me better understand what I was dealing with. Just a heads up for others, if you get unusual low tire warnings despite normal pressure readings when checked manually, definitely get the sensors looked at before the issue causes other problems.
