VW Caddy Camshaft Sensor Issues Hurt Performance

Looking for advice on what seems to be a camshaft position sensor issue in my 2004 VW Caddy 1.6L gas engine. The car has trouble starting, runs with noticeably reduced power, and throws engine error codes. The rough idling and occasional engine misfire make me suspect a faulty camshaft sensor. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms and had this sensor replaced? Would like to know if replacing the sensor fixed these issues, what other components were checked, and rough repair costs. Any input from those who had similar problems would be helpful before I take it to a workshop.

Having dealt with similar sensor issues on my 2006 VW Golf 1.6L, I can share my experience. The symptoms you describe, stalling engine, rough idling, and reduced power, match what I encountered exactly. My automotive sensor troubles started with intermittent timing issues, and the engine would occasionally misfire. After some initial DIY diagnosis attempts, I took it to a workshop. They found the root cause was not the camshaft sensor itself, but rather damaged wiring and a loose connection to the sensor. The total repair cost was 95€, which covered diagnostic time and fixing the cable connection. This was much cheaper than replacing the entire sensor unit. Before jumping to conclusions about needing a new sensor, consider getting the wiring and connections checked first. A proper diagnostic scan can help pinpoint whether its truly a faulty sensor or just connection issues. To provide more specific advice for your situation, could you share: Are there any specific error codes showing up? Does the problem occur more when the engine is cold or warm? Have you noticed any oil consumption issues? When was the last time you had a timing belt service?

Thanks for the detailed response. Last service was 2 months ago and nothing was flagged regarding timing belt or sensors. The check engine light started flashing last week showing error code P0341. The rough idling happens mostly when the engine is cold, especially during morning starts. No unusual oil consumption noticed. Starting to think its more than just wiring since the problem persists even after cleaning all visible connections. Will probably need that camshaft sensor replaced after all.

Thanks for providing those additional details. That P0341 error code specifically points to camshaft position sensor issues, and given the symptoms persist after checking connections, my initial wiring diagnosis might not be sufficient in your case. After my previous wiring fix, similar issues returned about a month later. The check engine light came back with the same timing-related codes. The workshop confirmed the camshaft sensor had failed completely, requiring replacement. The new sensor cost 180€ plus 95€ labor. Some key points from my experience: Cold start problems cleared up immediately after sensor replacement, Engine timing returned to normal, restoring full power, Check engine warnings disappeared, Fuel efficiency improved noticeably The sensor failure can sometimes be gradual, which explains why it wasnt caught during your recent service. Given your error code and symptoms match the classic signs of camshaft sensor failure, replacing the sensor would likely resolve your issues. Remember to use OEM parts for sensor replacements, aftermarket sensors can sometimes trigger new timing issues or fail prematurely.

The symptoms and error code P0341 definitely suggest a failing camshaft sensor. Your suggestion about checking the wiring first was helpful, but after cleaning connections with no improvement, I agree a sensor replacement is likely needed. These persistent cold start issues and timing problems match exactly what others have experienced with sensor failure. The cost breakdown you provided (180€ plus 95€ labor) gives me a good reference point for budgeting the repair. Since the stalling engine problems and rough idling are getting worse, I will schedule the repair soon. I appreciate the tip about using OEM parts, will definitely specify that to avoid future crankshaft timing issues. Given that my last service was recent and everything else checked out fine, focusing on the camshaft sensor replacement seems like the right approach. Will update once the repair is done to confirm if this resolved all the symptoms.
