VW Caddy DPF Issues: Common Fixes and Solutions
Summary of the thread
The conversation centers on a VW Caddy 2004 diesel experiencing DPF issues, indicated by reduced engine power, warning lights, smoke, and a strong exhaust smell. The problem is suspected to be related to the exhaust pressure sensor, as low readings are affecting the DPF operation. A similar case with a VW Golf involved replacing the defective pressure sensor, which resolved the issue without needing a full exhaust system replacement. The suggested solution is to check and possibly replace the pressure sensor, perform a forced DPF regeneration, and drive at highway speeds to restore normal operation, offering a cost-effective alternative to more extensive repairs.

Last service was at 68400km about 2 months ago. The engine management light started showing the problem three days ago after a longer highway drive. The error codes are P2463 and P0472, pointing to emission control issues. My main concern is that some people suggested replacing the entire exhaust system, which seems excessive considering the diesel engine runs smoothly otherwise. The reduced power mode only kicks in after about 15 minutes of city driving. Would cleaning the DPF be worth trying first before considering more expensive repairs? The diesel exhaust smell has become quite noticeable even at idle.

Thanks for the additional details. Having gone through this exact situation with my Golf, the error codes you mention definitely align with my experience, they specifically relate to the DPF regeneration system and pressure readings. In my case, I first tried a DPF cleaning service which cost 180€, but the problem returned after two weeks. The real fix came when the workshop found that the pressure sensor was sending incorrect readings, preventing proper particulate filter regeneration cycles. Since your symptoms match mine so closely, particularly the timing of power reduction during city driving and the exhaust smell at idle, I strongly suspect the same pressure sensor issue. A full exhaust system replacement would be overkill based on these symptoms. My suggested approach would be: 1. Have the pressure sensor checked and likely replaced 2. Run a forced DPF regeneration cycle 3. Use the car for at least 30 minutes on highway speeds The emission control system should then work properly again. Total repair cost in my case was substantially less than a new exhaust system, and the fix has lasted over 2 years now without any diesel exhaust issues returning.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the Golf repair. Based on my Caddy situation, I think I will follow your suggested approach starting with the pressure sensor check. The similar error codes and symptoms give me confidence this could be the right path. I have scheduled an appointment with a diesel specialist workshop for next week. They quoted 95€ for the initial diagnostic and pressure sensor test. If needed, they said the sensor replacement and forced regeneration would total around 350€, which seems reasonable compared to a full exhaust system replacement. Just to close this out, do you still run your Golf with the original particulate filter after the pressure sensor fix? The reduced repair cost versus a complete system replacement makes a big difference for keeping these older diesels running economically. Will update once I get the repairs done. The emission control issues and exhaust smell are quite bothersome, so hoping this resolves it like in your case.

I had a very similar issue with my VW Golf 2006 2.0 TDI. As someone who does basic maintenance but leaves complex repairs to professionals, this problem really caught my attention. The symptoms matched exactly, reduced power, warning lights, and problems with the diesel exhaust system. The diagnostic showed the exhaust back pressure sensor was giving faulty readings, affecting the particulate filter operation. Took it to a workshop specializing in diesel engines. They confirmed the back pressure sensor was defective and replaced it. Total cost was 245€ including labor. Since the repair, the engine performance returned to normal and all warning lights cleared. Before suggesting specific solutions, could you share: Engine size and type, Current mileage, Any recent repairs or maintenance, Exact error codes showing, When did symptoms first appear This information would help determine if your issue is identical to what I experienced. Sometimes these symptoms can also indicate other particulate filter related problems that need different approaches.
