VW Caddy Engine Stalls: EVAP System Leak Alert

My check engine light recently came on and the engine keeps stalling when idling. The last mechanic mentioned a possible fuel tank ventilation problem and leaks in the EVAP system. Given the symptoms, could this be causing my issues? Running a 2023 VW Caddy, gasoline engine with 140531km. Has anyone dealt with similar problems? Looking for experiences before heading back to a repair shop.

Had similar problems with my 2020 VW Golf GTI. The symptoms matched exactly, check engine light and rough idling. The system failure was traced to a defective purge valve and failing activated charcoal filter in the EVAP system. The leak detection test confirmed the charcoal filter was no longer properly filtering fuel vapors, leading to irregular air flow and pressure issues in the fuel system. This directly impacted fuel efficiency and engine performance. The repair involved replacing both the purge valve and charcoal filter assembly. While not a critical safety issue, running with a faulty EVAP system can lead to increased emissions and continued performance problems. The repair was straightforward but required specific diagnostic equipment to properly reset the system. Worth getting it checked soon, the symptoms usually worsen over time and can potentially lead to failed emissions tests. The repair took about 3 hours at the garage, including diagnostics and system testing.

Thanks for sharing your experience. The symptoms match my situation perfectly, especially the stalling issue. Did the fix completely resolve your problems? I am curious about the repair costs since my VW Caddy will likely need similar work on the purge valve and EVAP system components. Have you had any recurring check engine lights or fuel tank ventilation issues since the repair was done?

Just got back from having this fixed last week. The repair completely eliminated both the stalling and check engine light issues. My fuel efficiency has noticeably improved too, likely because the EVAP system is now properly managing air flow and fuel vapors. The final cost was 275€ for replacing the defective activated charcoal filter. The mechanic found this was the only component that needed replacement, the purge valve was actually working fine. The diagnostic test showed the fuel tank ventilation system leak is now completely resolved. No recurring problems since the fix. The engine runs smoothly at idle and the repair shop did a thorough job testing the entire EVAP system to ensure everything was sealed properly. It was definitely worth addressing the issue promptly rather than letting it persist. For your Caddy, while the repair approach might be similar, I would recommend getting a proper diagnostic test first since costs can vary depending on which specific components need replacement.

Thanks for the input. I took my Caddy to the shop yesterday and you were right about the diagnosis. The pressure sensor detected a significant leak in the EVAP system, and the mechanic found both a faulty purge valve and degraded charcoal filter. The total repair came to 320€, which included a full emission control system check. The check engine light is now off and the idle problems are completely gone. The mechanic showed me the old components, the charcoal filter was completely saturated and ineffective. They also mentioned my fuel efficiency should improve now that the system is properly sealed and functioning. Really glad I got this fixed quickly instead of waiting. The whole repair took about 4 hours, but the car runs perfectly now. No more stalling or rough idle issues. Will definitely monitor for any recurring problems, but the thorough testing they did makes me confident the fix will last.
