VW Caddy Misfire: Engine Troubleshooting Tips

My VW Caddy 2002 is giving me trouble lately with what seems like engine misfiring. The check engine light came on last week, and the engine runs really rough, especially when accelerating. Power feels noticeably reduced and there is a constant jerking motion during acceleration. Pretty sure these symptoms point to combustion misfire issues, but wanted to check what components I should look at first. Has anyone dealt with similar problems on these engines? Particularly interested in hearing what parts needed replacement (spark plugs, ignition coils etc) and rough cost estimates for the repairs. Any tips on pinpointing the exact cylinders causing trouble before heading to a workshop would also be helpful. Thanks in advance for any insights.

I experienced something very similar with my VW Golf 2004 1.6L. After dealing with a rough idle and engine misfiring, I learned quite a bit about these issues. The check engine light came on and my car showed identical symptoms, jerky acceleration and power loss. After scanning, it turned out to be a cylinder misfire caused by a faulty fuel injector. The workshop found the injector was clogged and not spraying fuel properly. Total repair cost was 515€, which included: Diagnostic scan, Fuel injector replacement, Labor costs, System testing Since these VW engines from that era share many components, your Caddy might have similar issues. However, to give more specific advice, could you share: Engine size/type, Current mileage, Whether you have access to an OBD scanner, Any other warning lights besides check engine, When was the last time spark plugs were changed The fuel injector issue is common, but misfires can also be caused by bad spark plugs, faulty coils, or vacuum leaks. Getting this diagnostic information would help narrow down the exact cause.

The scan showed issues in cylinder 2, and replacing both the ignition coil and spark plug fixed the rough running. Just updated these during my latest service at 39184km. The throttle response is now smooth again and the engine misfiring completely stopped. Total repair cost was 220€ including parts and labor. For others with similar combustion misfire symptoms, having the specific cylinder diagnosed first really helps narrow down the problem. It saved time not having to test all components at once. The service center explained these fuel injector and ignition system issues are fairly common on these engines after extended use, even with regular maintenance. They recommended keeping an eye on the other cylinders as preventive maintenance.

Thanks for the update on fixing your Caddy's misfire issues. Had the exact same experience with my VW Golf when cylinder 2 started acting up. The ignition coil and spark plug replacement really made a difference in throttle response. Smart move getting the specific cylinder diagnosed first. When combustion misfire symptoms showed up in my Golf, I initially wasted time checking the entire fuel system before pinpointing the actual problem. Quick tip from my experience, since these VW engines tend to have ignition coil issues develop progressively, it might be worth checking the resistance readings on the remaining coils during your next service. Catching early signs of wear can prevent sudden failures. My other coils started showing problems about 10000km after fixing the first one. The 220€ repair cost seems about right. I paid similar for my Golf when the parts were replaced. Regular maintenance definitely helps, but as you mentioned, these ignition system components do eventually wear out regardless. At least now you know the warning signs if another cylinder starts having combustion misfire issues.

Thanks for the helpful advice about checking coil resistance readings. Yes, my VW with 39184km is now running perfectly after the ignition coil and spark plug replacement in cylinder 2. The check engine light is off and the engine misfiring symptoms are completely gone. Really glad the repair only came to 220€ since I was worried it might be a more expensive fuel injector problem. Currently monitoring the throttle response closely to catch any early warning signs with the other cylinders. The service center gave me a heads up about typical wear patterns on these engines, so I know what to watch for now. Makes sense to be proactive about testing the remaining ignition coils during future services. Much better to catch issues early rather than waiting for another cylinder to fail and cause combustion misfire problems down the road. Posting this update in case others run into similar symptoms, getting that initial diagnostic scan to identify the specific cylinder really streamlined the repair process.
