VW Caddy Transmission Slipping & Limp Mode Alert

My VW Caddy (2017, gasoline, 39412km) started acting up with rough gear changes and slipping transmission. The powertrain malfunction light came on and I noticed the transfer case seems to be in limp home mode. After a bad experience with my last mechanic, I am hesitant to return there. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms and can recommend what to check first? Could this be related to the torque converter or is it more likely a control module issue?

Had similar issues on a VW Golf TSI from 2014. The symptoms you describe match what happened, rough shifts, transmission slipping, and limp mode activation. In my case, the root cause was a faulty ABS sensor that triggered a chain reaction. The control module interpreted the false signals as a major transmission fault, forcing the car into limp mode to prevent damage. The torque converter was actually fine, but the system needed a complete diagnostic trouble code scan to identify the actual problem. The consequential faults created multiple error codes, making it appear like a transmission failure. After replacing the ABS sensor and clearing the diagnostic trouble codes, the transmission returned to normal operation. The control module needed recalibration to restore proper shift patterns. This turned out to be a serious issue that required specialized diagnostic equipment, but the actual fix was straightforward once properly diagnosed. Would recommend getting a full system scan before assuming transmission or torque converter problems. Check if the ABS warning light is also illuminated, this could confirm if your symptoms stem from a similar root cause.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Your symptoms do sound exactly like what happened to my Caddy last winter, it was showing gear selector errors and the transmission kept slipping into limp mode. Good point about the ABS sensor being the root cause. I had multiple diagnostic trouble codes cleared but the problem kept coming back until they found the actual issue, turned out to be a wiring harness fault near the transfer case that was causing intermittent signal problems. Would you mind sharing what the repair ended up costing you? Also curious if youve had any transmission-related problems since the fix?

After getting it properly diagnosed, the repair was completely covered under warranty so it cost 0€. The mechanic confirmed it was the ABS sensor sending incorrect signals that triggered the transfer case limp mode. After fixing the wiring harness and clearing the control module codes, everything has worked perfectly. Have not experienced any transmission problems since then. The traction control and all other systems are functioning normally. The rough shifting and transmission slipping completely disappeared once they addressed the root cause rather than just clearing codes. This really shows how important proper diagnosis is, what seemed like major transmission issues was actually just the control module reacting to faulty sensor data. Getting the right mechanic who understood the relationship between the ABS and transmission systems made all the difference.

I finally decided to take my Caddy to a different workshop that specializes in VW diagnostics. The mechanic found the wiring issue within an hour using their advanced diagnostic trouble scanning equipment. Total repair cost came to 380€ including labor and parts. The faulty wiring was causing the torque converter to receive incorrect signals, which explained the rough shifting. Watching them trace the actual problem was eye-opening, they showed me exactly where the wiring had deteriorated near the transfer case. The traction control and transmission are now working perfectly. No more limp home mode activations or warning lights. Really glad I switched to a shop that took the time to properly diagnose rather than just throwing parts at the problem. Been driving it for 3 months since the repair without any issues. The transmission shifts smoothly again and all the fault codes have stayed cleared. Definitely learned my lesson about finding mechanics who understand these complex electronic systems.
