VW Caddy: EVAP Stalling Issue & Check Engine Light Fix

Looking for advice on a recurring issue with my 2020 VW Caddy gasoline. The check engine light keeps coming on and the engine stalls when idling. Initial investigation points to the tank ventilation valve in the EVAP system. Has anyone encountered similar symptoms and managed to get them fixed? Interested in hearing about repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. The engine runs fine otherwise, but these symptoms are pretty consistent. Wondering if this could be related to the emission system or if theres another component in the fuel tank system causing trouble. Any insight on diagnostic steps or repair costs would be really helpful.

I had a similar issue with my 2018 VW T6 gasoline model. With some experience working on VW engines, I can share what worked in my case. The symptoms you describe match exactly what I encountered, engine light on and stalling at idle. The issue turned out to be clogged hoses in the tank ventilation system. The EVAP system pressure sensor was reporting errors because the vapors could not flow properly through the blocked lines. My workshop performed: Complete inspection of the EVAP system, Cleaning of the ventilation hoses, Testing of the purge valve operation, System pressure test to confirm fix Total repair cost was 175€, which included parts cleaning and diagnostic time. The fix has lasted over a year now with no recurring issues. Before suggesting specific fixes for your case, it would help to know: Have you noticed any fuel smell? Does the problem get worse after refueling? Have you had any recent fuel system work done? What error codes is the engine light showing? The Caddy and T6 share similar tank ventilation systems, but knowing these details would help narrow down if your issue matches what I experienced.

Thanks for the feedback. At 112100km and with my last service done 2 months ago, I can confirm my issue persists. There is a strong fuel smell, especially after refueling, which points more clearly toward an EVAP system problem. The check engine light scan showed error code P0456, indicating a small leak in the emission system. I checked the gas cap and thats properly sealed. The stalling seems worse on hot days, which makes sense if the tank ventilation system isnt working correctly. I will have the hoses inspected based on your experience, as this sounds like a similar problem to what you encountered with your automotive repair. The suggested repair cost seems reasonable if it solves both the stalling and emission system issues. Will report back after having it checked.

Good to hear back about your Caddy issue. The fuel smell and P0456 code definitely align with what I experienced on my T6. The hot weather connection you mentioned is particularly telling, I noticed the same pattern, as heat increases fuel vapor pressure and makes ventilation problems more obvious. From my repair experience, having a properly sealed gas cap but still getting that fuel smell strongly suggests blocked ventilation lines rather than a bad purge valve. My mechanic explained that debris accumulation in these lines is fairly common around the 100000km mark in these VW models. Just to help you avoid some unnecessary costs, before taking it to the shop, you might want to: Check if your tank ventilation hoses are visibly kinked, Listen for a clicking sound from the purge valve when starting the engine, Watch if the idle stabilizes briefly after a fresh start before beginning to fluctuate The repair cost you were quoted sounds about right, mine was 175€ and prices havent changed much. The most important part is ensuring they do a proper pressure test after cleaning the system, as this confirms all the ventilation pathways are clear. Let us know how the repair goes, always helpful to build up our knowledge base on these common VW EVAP system issues.

Thanks for the input. After having my Caddy inspected today, the fuel tank ventilation system was indeed the culprit, just as discussed. The repair shop found severely clogged ventilation lines in the EVAP system, matching the P0456 error code perfectly. The automotive repair included: Full cleaning of the emissions system components, Replacement of 2 cracked vent hoses, Complete system pressure testing, Reset of the engine light Total cost came to 195€, slightly more than expected due to the damaged hoses, but still reasonable. The fuel smell is completely gone now and the engine idles perfectly, even in warm weather. No more stalling issues. For anyone searching later with similar symptoms, that combination of fuel smell, stalling, and the P0456 code really does point straight to the EVAP system. Getting those ventilation lines checked early can prevent more expensive repairs down the line. Really appreciate the guidance from everyone here. Case closed on this one.
