VW Crafter Heater Core Troubleshooting Guide
Summary of the thread
The conversation centers on troubleshooting low heating output in a 2015 VW Crafter diesel, with an error code P0597 indicating a thermostat heater control circuit issue. The problem may be caused by a faulty water valve or related wiring, restricting coolant flow to the heater core. Suggested solutions include using diagnostic tools to check the thermostat heater circuit, valve actuator movement, and coolant flow, focusing on wiring connections rather than replacing major parts. The discussion emphasizes targeted diagnostics to avoid unnecessary repairs, with a similar issue resolved by repairing a damaged cable connection.

Just had my 95000km service done last month, so the system should be good. My error code is P0597 and heating fails completely, no warmth at all. Coolant levels look fine and I have not noticed any coolant leak under the vehicle. The engine temperature gauge shows normal readings. Interesting about the cable connection issue you found. Good to know it might not require replacing the entire water valve assembly. When the workshop tested your valve response, did they use any specific diagnostic equipment? Would be helpful to know what tools were used to properly diagnose the valve blockage in the cooling system.

Thanks for those additional details about your Crafter. When my Transporter had similar symptoms, the workshop used a professional diagnostic scanner that could specifically monitor the water valve activation signals and coolant flow parameters in real time. The P0597 code you mentioned points to the thermostat heater control circuit, which is actually different from my initial cable issue. However, the workshop did a thorough test of the entire cooling system on my vehicle using: A pressure tester to verify system integrity, Digital multimeter to check valve voltage signals, Flow meter to measure actual coolant circulation The valve blockage diagnosis revealed the car heating system was getting the right signals, but the mechanical response was inconsistent. The wiring repair resolved this completely, and cabin heat was restored to normal levels immediately. Given your error code and symptoms, I suggest having them specifically check: Thermostat heater circuit resistance values, Engine coolant temperature sensor readings, Valve actuator movement when commanded The fact your engine temperature reads normal while having no heat suggests the issue is likely in the heater circuit rather than a general cooling system problem, similar to what I experienced. All work including diagnostics cost 95€ in my case. Definitely get it checked soon, as proper cabin heating is essential and the fix might be simpler than expected.

Thanks for sharing those testing details from your repair experience. The diagnostic steps you described with the scanner make a lot of sense. I will schedule an appointment next week to have the thermostat heater circuit checked first, since that matches my P0597 code. Good to hear you got the heating working again without major parts replacement. My symptoms do seem quite similar, normal engine temp but no cabin heat. Hopefully my fix will be as straightforward as yours with the wiring. The price also seems reasonable at 95€ if it solves the problem. I will make sure they check the valve actuator movement and coolant flow like you suggested. Really helpful to know what specific tests to request rather than just telling them the heater core is not working. Will update once I get the diagnosis results. Thanks again for walking me through your repair process.

I faced a nearly identical heating issue with my 2013 Transporter TDI last winter. With basic repair experience, I initially thought it was engine overheating related, but the diagnosis revealed something simpler. The main problem was indeed the water valve, but not the valve itself. The workshop found a damaged cable connection that was preventing proper valve operation. This restricted coolant flow to the heater core, causing poor cabin heating performance. The diagnostic process was straightforward: Electronic check confirmed valve communication errors, Visual inspection showed corroded plug connections, Testing revealed inconsistent valve response Total repair cost was 95€, covering: Diagnostic time, Replacement of wiring connector, System reset and testing What error code is your Crafter showing? Also, does the heating work intermittently or not at all? These details would help determine if you are dealing with the same issue. The symptoms sound very similar but knowing the specific engine variant and whether any coolant leaks are present would help narrow it down. Might also be worth checking if your coolant level is correct, as low coolant can cause similar symptoms.
