Thanks for sharing your experience with the steering column repair. Mine is now fixed but I was curious, do you remember roughly what you paid for the complete wiring harness replacement? The electronic steering issues really had me worried it would be a much bigger repair. Also, has everything worked perfectly with the electric adjustment since the fix, or have you noticed any other steering issues popping up? My column adjustment is working fine now but always good to know what to watch out for.

Got good news since my last post, the electronic steering issue was fully resolved at my shop. Turned out much simpler than the complete harness replacement I initially described. The mechanic found a loose cable connection at the column adjustment module that was causing the steering failure. Total repair was just 95€ to fix the defective connection and reset the system. Way better than the extensive wiring work I went through before. The electric steering column adjustment has worked flawlessly for over a year now with no recurring issues. Looking back, I should have had them check the simple connections first before replacing the entire harness on my van. These adjustment issues often come down to basic electrical problems rather than major component failures. Watch for any unusual noises or stiffness when using the column adjustment, those can be early signs of developing issues. But with the connection properly secured, these electronic steering systems are generally pretty reliable.

Headed to a new mechanic after seeing your reply, glad I did. My repair story turned out similar to your latest experience. The steering issue was just a damaged connector that needed cleaning and proper securing. Total bill came to 120€ including diagnostic time. The mechanic showed me where the steering column wiring had worked loose over time. Much better than my previous shop who wanted to replace the entire electronic steering system for over 800€. The car steering feels perfect now and all adjustments work smoothly. Really appreciated learning from your experience, saved me from an unnecessary expensive repair. Makes sense to start with checking basic connections before jumping to major parts replacement.

Had the same mechanical fault on a 2013 VW Transporter 2.0 TDI. The electric steering adjustment stopped working suddenly, throwing error codes related to the steering column module. The steering issue turned out to be a damaged wiring harness where it flexes near the steering column. The constant movement had worn through the protective sleeve and caused intermittent connection problems. The repair involved replacing the complete wiring harness assembly for the steering column controls. This was a serious repair requiring removal of several interior components to access the full wiring run. The steering failure symptoms matched yours, complete loss of adjustment function and persistent error codes. When dealing with electric steering problems, always get the wiring checked first. In many cases, its not the motors or control module but the connections that fail. The repair requires specific diagnostic equipment to reset the system after component replacement. This type of steering issue typically needs professional repair at a specialized workshop due to the complexity of the electrical system and the need for proper calibration tools.
