VW Crafter Wipers Dead, Switch or Engine Link Alert

Looking for help with wiper problems in my 2012 VW Crafter diesel (72106km). The windshield wipers stopped working completely and the check engine light is on. My previous mechanic experience was disappointing, so I suspect a faulty wiper switch. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would appreciate insights on repair costs and recommended fixes before heading to a new shop.

Had the same issue with my 2015 VW Transporter TDI. The symptoms pointed to a failing wiper switch, but it turned out more complex. The steering column assembly needed attention because multiple connections were affected. During repair, we found corroded terminals where the wiper switch connects to the main harness. The rain sensor was also malfunctioning, which triggered false signals to the control module. This explained why the check engine light activated, modern vehicles integrate these systems with central electronics. The fix required: Cleaning all connector terminals, Replacing the complete wiper switch assembly, Recalibrating the rain sensor, Clearing fault codes This was a serious electrical issue that could have affected other systems like cruise control if left unaddressed. These problems often start small but can cascade into bigger electrical concerns. Worth checking the wiper blades and arms for binding or mechanical issues first, but given your symptoms, its likely electrical. Recommend having a complete diagnostic scan before replacing parts.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Your case sounds very similar to what happened with my Crafter last winter. My wipers also stopped working and the turn signal started acting up too. The mechanic found a faulty wiper motor and damaged wiring in the steering column. Would you mind sharing what the total repair cost was in your case? Also wondering if you had any recurring issues since the fix? My repair was done about 6 months ago and everything works fine now, but always good to know what to watch out for.

Just got back from having the exact same issue resolved on my Transporter. The wiper switch problem turned out to be a loose connection in the wiring harness near the steering column. The mechanic found it quickly, properly secured the connection, and everything works perfectly now. Total cost was 95€ for the repair, which was much less than expected since no parts needed replacement. The windshield wipers and turn signal are both functioning like new. Six months after the fix, no recurring issues whatsoever. Really glad I got it checked when I did. These electrical gremlins can spread to other systems if left unfixed. The connection between the wiper switch and main harness is a common weak point in these vans.

Thanks for the advice. Finally got my issue sorted last week. Took it to a certified shop and the diagnosis matched what you described. They found corrosion in the wiring harness and a failing wiper switch inside the steering column. The repair came to 320€ total, more than I hoped but less than I feared. They cleaned all connections, replaced the wiper switch assembly, and checked the entire system. The mechanic also found and fixed a loose ground wire that was causing the check engine light. Car wipers work perfectly now and the warning light is gone. The whole repair took about 3 hours. Much better experience than my previous mechanic who just wanted to replace the entire wiper motor without proper diagnosis. Been driving for a week now with no issues. The cruise control and all other functions are working normally too. Definitely worth fixing it properly rather than trying quick fixes that dont last.
