VW EOS Cabrio problems with the engine, engine indicator light keeps coming on

Hello everyone, I have a 2012 VW Eos Diesel with approx. 107654 km mileage. I currently have some problems with the car: black smoke from the exhaust when accelerating, the check engine light is on, noticeable power loss, an exhaust leak and strong exhaust odor. After my bad experience at the last workshop visit, I suspect that the problem is related to a malfunction of the exhaust aftertreatment system. Has anyone had similar experiences and can recommend any tips or garages that are good at dealing with such problems? Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A 2012 VW Eos Diesel owner experienced black smoke from the exhaust, a check engine light, power loss, an exhaust leak, and a strong exhaust odor. The issue was suspected to be related to the exhaust aftertreatment system. A similar case involved a defective lambda sensor, which, when replaced, resolved the problem. The owner followed advice to visit a specialized VW workshop, where a faulty lambda sensor was diagnosed and replaced, resolving the issues.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, I drive a 2015 VW Golf Diesel and a few months ago I had similar symptoms as you described: black smoke, engine control light and loss of power. In my case, one of the lambda sensors was actually defective. This also led to a strong exhaust odor and an exhaust leak. The workshop diagnosed the defective lambda sensor and replaced it, which solved the problem. It was definitely a serious matter, as a defective lambda sensor can affect the entire exhaust gas purification process. If you are looking for a reliable workshop, I can recommend you to look for specialized VW workshops in your area or take recommendations from other forum members. Good luck!

Thanks for your answer! Do you remember how much the repair cost you? And were there any other problems with your Golf after replacing the lambda sensor? Best regards!

Hey, sure, I can still tell you that. After I went to the garage, the exhaust aftertreatment malfunction was actually fixed. It cost me €375 to replace the defective lambda sensor. Since then, my Golf has been running perfectly again and no further problems have arisen. I hope this helps you and that your Eos will soon be fit again! Best regards!

Hello everyone, I wanted to tell you briefly about my last experience at the garage. After receiving your advice, I went to a specialized VW workshop. The diagnosis actually revealed that one of the lambda sensors was faulty, just as it was described to me here in the forum. The replacement ultimately cost me €380, which was roughly in line with what I was quoted here. After the replacement, the car ran perfectly again - no more black smoke, no more check engine light and the exhaust smell was also gone. It was quite a relief to finally have the problem solved! Thanks again for your help and good advice. I hope if anyone is in a similar situation that my experience can help. Best regards!

Hi there! It sounds like to me your exhaust aftertreatment system might be the issue. I would recommend finding a specialist in diesel exhaust systems. All the best!

Hello, I have the following problem, engine control light is on, power is available, according to GFS: catalytic converter system bank 1, effect too low. A lambda sensor upstream of the catalytic converter was replaced six months ago. I would be glad if you could help me. Thanks in advance

Start by checking for any exhaust leaks before the catalytic converter, as these can affect its efficiency. If no leaks are found, consider having the catalytic converter itself inspected for blockages or damage. Let me know how it goes or if you have any further questions!
