VW Eos Diesel Cold Start Struggles, Injector Alert

My VW Eos 2011 diesel (63174km) struggles during cold starts lately. Engine runs rough for the first minute and sometimes needs multiple attempts to start. Had a not-so-great experience at a local shop, so looking for advice from others who dealt with cold start problems. Could this be related to fuel delivery or injector issues? What should I look out for when getting it checked?

Summary of the thread

A VW Eos diesel is experiencing cold start struggles, with rough engine performance and multiple starting attempts needed. The issue is suspected to be related to fuel delivery or injector problems. A similar case with a VW Passat pointed to faulty injectors, where uneven spray patterns and carbon buildup affected fuel delivery, causing engine misfires. Suggested solutions include a comprehensive fuel system pressure test, individual injector testing, and possibly replacing faulty injectors. Seeking a second opinion from a diesel specialist is recommended to ensure proper diagnosis and repair.

Had similar symptoms on a VW Passat 2014 diesel. The rough cold starts and multiple cranking attempts pointed to a faulty fuel injector. An injector test revealed uneven spray patterns and carbon buildup affecting fuel delivery. The fuel system diagnostic showed one injector was delivering inconsistent amounts of fuel, causing engine misfire during cold starts. The repair involved removing all injectors, performing thorough injector cleaning, and replacing the problematic one. The fuel rail also needed inspection for pressure consistency. This was a serious issue that required immediate attention since bad injectors can lead to increased fuel consumption, engine damage, and complete failure if left untreated. The symptoms typically worsen in cold weather. A proper diagnosis should include: Complete fuel system pressure test, Individual injector test for spray pattern, Fuel return line inspection, Computer diagnostic for injection timing Worth getting a second opinion from a shop specializing in diesel fuel systems. Small issues with injectors can cascade into bigger engine problems if not addressed properly.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the injector issues. The symptoms and repair approach match what I am seeing with my Eos. Curious, do you remember what the total repair cost was for your injector replacement and cleaning? Also wondering if youve had any hard starting problems since getting it fixed. My local shop quoted quite a high price so trying to get a sense of reasonable costs before proceeding with repairs.

Thanks for asking about the costs. Since getting the faulty cold start injector fixed last month, my car starts perfectly even on the coldest mornings. The rough idle and multiple start attempts are completely gone. The total repair came to 515€, which included: Comprehensive injector test, Removal and cleaning of all injectors, Replacement of the defective injector, Fuel rail pressure verification, Labor costs While not cheap, the improved fuel delivery and smooth engine performance made it worth the investment. The engine misfire issues during cold starts have not returned, and fuel consumption has actually improved slightly. If your quote is significantly higher, it might be worth getting a second opinion from a diesel specialist. Just make sure they perform a proper diagnostic test to confirm the exact injector causing the problem before any repairs.

After reading the helpful replies, I decided to get my Eos checked by a different mechanic who specializes in diesel engines. The diagnostic test confirmed the fuel injection problems, exactly what was suggested here. The repair bill ended up being 580€ for injector cleaning, replacing one bad injector, and checking the entire fuel system. More than I wanted to spend, but the car runs perfectly now. No more hard starting issues in the morning and the engine runs smoothly from the first turn of the key. The shop showed me the old injector which had significant carbon buildup affecting the spray pattern. They also found slightly low fuel rail pressure which they adjusted during the repair. Really glad I got a second opinion and had it properly diagnosed instead of continuing to struggle with those cold starts.
