VW Eos Oil Pressure Warning, Critical Engine Alert

My VW Eos 2012 diesel is showing worrying symptoms, the oil pressure warning lamp keeps lighting up accompanied by concerning mechanical noise from the engine. The oil pressure gauge readings are very low even though oil levels are fine. I suspect low oil pressure but want to understand the likely causes before heading to a workshop. Has anyone dealt with similar issues? Particularly interested in whether it turned out to be oil pump failure, clogged oil filter, or worn engine bearings. What repairs were needed to resolve it? Currently still driving but keeping speeds low, hoping to get some insight on the urgency of repairs and rough cost expectations.

Had almost the exact same issue with my 2010 VW Passat diesel last year. As someone with moderate car repair experience, I can tell you this needs immediate attention, stop driving it if possible to prevent severe engine damage. The symptoms you describe match my situation perfectly, oil pressure warning, engine noise, and low gauge readings despite proper oil levels. In my case, the root cause was a complete oil pump failure that was starving the engine bearings of proper lubrication. That mechanical noise you hear could be the engine bearings starting to wear due to insufficient oil pressure. The repair involved: Replacing the oil pump, Cleaning the oil passages, Installing new engine oil and filter, Testing oil pressure at different RPMs Total cost was 755€ for parts and labor. The workshop confirmed catching it early prevented more extensive engine damage that could have resulted from continued low oil pressure. To better assist, could you share: Current mileage, When you last changed the engine oil, Type of oil being used, Whether the noise changes with engine RPM, If there is any oil leakage visible under the car This information would help determine if your situation matches what I experienced and if you might be facing similar repairs.

Thanks for the feedback. For reference, my last service including oil change was done 5600km ago in October. They replaced the oil filter and used synthetic oil as specified for the engine. The noise definitely gets louder at higher RPMs but seems less noticeable when the engine is cold. The oil pressure sensor readings continue to fluctuate, sometimes dropping very low at idle. No visible oil leakage under the car so far. Hearing about your oil pump failure is concerning. Given the similar symptoms, I will stop driving it and have it towed to a workshop tomorrow. Really hoping the engine bearings havent been damaged from low oil pressure yet. Will update once I know what the actual issue is.

Thanks for the update. The symptoms you describe are nearly identical to what I experienced, especially the RPM-dependent noise and fluctuating pressure readings at idle. Smart decision to stop driving and get it towed. The cold engine behavior you mentioned is particularly telling. When I had the oil pump failure, the noise was also less noticeable with a cold engine because the oil was thicker and could maintain slightly better pressure despite the failing pump. My repair started with a full oil pressure test that confirmed readings well below spec. While my engine bearings showed some initial wear from the low oil pressure, catching it before complete failure saved me from needing a full engine rebuild. Key warning signs we both experienced: Intermittent oil pressure warnings, RPM-dependent mechanical noise, Fluctuating pressure readings, Worse symptoms when warm Given your recent oil change with proper synthetic oil and no visible oil leakage, the oil pump is likely the primary suspect, just as it was in my case. Have the workshop start with a pressure test to confirm. If caught early like mine, you might avoid extensive engine bearing damage and get away with just an oil pump replacement.

Thank you for all the detailed responses. After checking with my workshop today, you were absolutely right, it was indeed the oil pump failing. The oil pressure test showed readings at only 30% of normal specifications. The total repair cost came to 820€ including: New oil pump installation, System flush to clear any metal particles, Fresh oil change with synthetic oil, New oil pressure sensor as a precaution Fortunately, the technician found only minimal wear on the engine bearings since I stopped driving it quickly after the low oil pressure warnings started. The engine now runs smoothly with normal oil pressure readings across all RPM ranges. Really grateful for the advice to stop driving immediately. If I had continued hoping it would resolve itself, I might have ended up with major engine damage requiring much more extensive repairs. For anyone else seeing similar symptoms, take the oil pressure warnings seriously and get it checked right away to avoid potential engine failure.
