VW Eos Steering Issues Point to Failed Angle Sensor

My 2009 VW Eos has developed steering issues that I need help diagnosing. The steering wheel requires much more force than usual and vibrates noticeably while driving. The electronic stability and traction control warning lights occasionally flash on the dashboard. I suspect the steering angle sensor might be faulty, but I want to confirm before heading to a workshop. Has anyone encountered similar symptoms and had them fixed? What was the actual problem and repair cost? The steering feels particularly heavy during slow-speed maneuvers in parking lots. Looking for real experiences to help pinpoint the issue before booking a repair. Any recommended tests I can do to verify if its truly the angle sensor causing these problems?

I had a very similar issue with my 2011 VW Golf, which shares many steering column components with the Eos. From my experience with automotive sensors, the symptoms you describe strongly match what I encountered, heavy steering, intermittent stability control warnings, and vibrations. After some diagnostic work, it turned out the steering angle sensor needed recoding and calibration. The repair cost me 195€ at a workshop specializing in VW electronics. The fix involved connecting their diagnostic tool to properly code the steering angle sensor. The whole process took about 2 hours, but completely resolved the issues. Before you proceed with repairs, could you share: Current mileage on your Eos, When the symptoms first appeared, Whether the issues started gradually or suddenly, If you recently had any wheel alignment work done, If you notice the problem more when turning left or right These details would help determine if your case matches what I experienced with the sensor coding issue. There could be other steering column related problems causing similar symptoms. Just note that continuing to drive with these symptoms risks further issues with the power steering and stability control systems. Best to get it checked soon by a workshop with proper diagnostic equipment.

Thanks for sharing your experience. My last service was 3 months ago and the issues started appearing gradually over the past few weeks. The problem seems equally bad turning both directions, and no recent alignment work was done. The vibrations through the steering wheel have gotten progressively worse, especially when the traction control light comes on. I will take it to a workshop given the potential risks to the stability control and power steering systems you mentioned. Do you recall if your tech mentioned any specific fault codes during the diagnostic? This would be helpful to reference when I take it in.

Thanks for those additional details. In my case, the diagnostic showed fault code G85 for the steering angle sensor failure. The tech mentioned this is a common issue in our VW models around the 100000km mark. The gradual onset of symptoms you describe mirrors my experience exactly. The progressive worsening of vibrations combined with stability control warnings strongly suggests the steering sensor needs recalibration or replacement, just like mine did. When the workshop did the sensor replacement on my car, they had to perform a complete wheel alignment afterward to ensure all steering angles were correctly set. The total repair ended up closer to 300€ including the alignment work, but it was worth every cent as the steering returned to normal immediately. If your symptoms continue worsening like mine did, you might notice the electronic stability system becoming more erratic. Getting this fixed sooner rather than later can prevent potential damage to other steering components. Quick tip from my repair experience: make sure the workshop verifies the new sensor is properly communicating with the stability control module after installation. In my case, they had to perform an additional electronic reset to get everything working correctly.

Thanks for that detailed information about your experience. My Eos has about 140000km on it now, and the steering issues started about 3 weeks ago, getting gradually worse over time. The cost breakdown you shared for the sensor replacement and alignment work helps with my planning. A 300€ repair bill seems reasonable if it fixes all these symptoms. The vibrations are definitely becoming more frequent, and having the stability control acting up is concerning. I will note down that G85 fault code to mention when booking the repair. Good point about making sure they verify the sensor communication with the stability control module, I will specifically ask about that during the service. Going to schedule this repair for next week before the steering gets any heavier or the electronic stability system becomes more problematic. Really appreciate you sharing your repair experience, it has helped confirm my suspicions about the steering angle sensor being the likely culprit.
