VW Fox Parking Sensors Dead After Mechanic Visit

I experienced a similar issue with my VW Polo 2011 TDI. The proximity sensors and rearview camera system failed completely after routine maintenance. The diagnostic scan revealed the parking aid control module had lost communication due to faulty wiring near the trunk area. The root cause was damaged wire insulation that occurred when removing the rear bumper during previous work. The exposed wires caused a short circuit in the obstacle detection system. The repair required replacing a wiring harness section and recalibrating the control module. This is a serious but relatively common issue when proper care isnt taken during bumper removal. The parking sensor wiring is quite vulnerable in that area. While my previous mechanic denied responsibility, the evidence of damaged cables was clear once the bumper was removed again. The fix restored full functionality to all proximity sensors and warning systems. Given your symptoms match mine exactly, complete sensor failure after service work, Id strongly suspect similar wiring damage rather than failed sensors themselves. Make sure to have them specifically check the wiring harness where it connects through the rear bumper. Physical inspection of these cables often reveals the true cause faster than electronic diagnostics alone.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I also dealt with a complete radar sensor failure on my VW Fox last spring. The rearview camera and proximity sensors stopped responding right after what should have been basic maintenance work. The repair ended up being relatively simple, just some faulty wiring that got pinched during reassembly. Would you mind sharing what the final repair costs were in your case? Curious if it was comparable. Also, have you had any recurring issues with the obstacle detection system since the fix?

Great news, no recurring problems at all with the parking assist system since getting it repaired. The obstacle detection and proximity sensors have been working flawlessly after fixing a pinched wire connection near the rear bumper. The total repair cost came to 95€, which covered diagnosing the faulty wiring and replacing the damaged cable section. This was actually less expensive than initially feared, since the parking sensors themselves didnt need replacement. The repair shop found the same issue you mentioned, the wiring had been damaged during previous maintenance work. Once they corrected the cable routing and properly secured all connections, the parking aid system returned to full functionality. The warning beeps and distance alerts now work perfectly during parking maneuvers. Its pretty common for these issues to stem from wiring problems rather than actual sensor failures. Having a technician who knows where to look for potential cable damage can save both time and money on unnecessary parts replacement.

After getting your input about the pinched wire being the likely culprit, I took my Fox to a different mechanic for a proper inspection. The ultrasonic sensors turned out to be fine, but they found damaged wiring behind the rear bumper, exactly where you described. The repair cost was 120€ total, slightly more than yours but still reasonable. They had to replace a section of the wiring harness and recalibrate the control module. The parking assist system now works perfectly again. The radar sensors are responding properly and I get clear warning signals when backing up. Thanks for steering me in the right direction. I filed a complaint with the previous shop since their careless work during routine maintenance clearly caused the wiring damage. They initially denied it but agreed to reimburse the repair cost after seeing photos of the damaged cables.
