VW Golf Cabrio engine indicator light on

Loss of engine power

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Poor fuel economy

Unsteady engine

Check engine light on

Jerking on acceleration

Hi guys, I currently have a problem with my VW Golf built in 2011 with a gasoline engine. When accelerating, black smoke comes out of the exhaust and the engine light comes on. The car also has a loss of power and runs very unevenly - it even jerks when accelerating. Fuel consumption has also increased. I suspect that a defect in the lambda probe heater could be responsible. Have any of you experienced similar symptoms and could give me tips on how to narrow down the problem? How did you fix it and what was your experience at the garage? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2009 VW Jetta. As far as I know, these symptoms could indicate a faulty engine control unit. I don't have much car knowledge, but that's exactly what it was with my Jetta. They replaced the control unit in the workshop and it cost 1000 euros - not cheap fun, but it's been running well ever since. But to really be able to help you, it would be helpful if you could provide more information about your car. How many kilometers has it done? Has it been serviced regularly? What model and engine version is it exactly? Hope that helps you for now.

Hey, thanks for your quick reply. My Golf already has 112345 kilometers on the clock. Last service was only a month ago. At first I thought it was the engine oil, but that was changed. Hopefully it's not the control unit, that's quite a cost factor. But well, if there's no other way... Your experience definitely helps me, thank you very much!

Hey, you're welcome! Yes, the control unit really is a costly affair. But remember, it could also have something to do with the injection system or the air flow meter. With your mileage, I would definitely have the spark plugs and ignition coils checked. And perhaps a look at the lambda sensor, as you suspected, wouldn't be wrong. Of course, I'm not a car mechanic, but these are just suggestions as to what it could be. I would recommend that you have a professional diagnostic test carried out in a workshop. You can usually get a fairly accurate fault diagnosis there. Good luck with that, hopefully the problem can be solved soon!

Hi, thanks for your detailed suggestions. I hadn't actually thought about the spark plugs or ignition coils. The injection system and the air flow meter also seem to be plausible points that I should consider. Yes, I was going to have the lambda sensor checked anyway. I think the next step is, as you said, to have a professional diagnostic test done at the garage. I'm hoping the solution will be less costly than a new ECU.Thanks again for your help, you've definitely brought up some valuable points I should have thought of!
