Thanks for the detailed response. Yes, the signal quality definitely changes when moving vs stationary. Signal gets much worse above 60kmh. No issues with other electronics, everything works fine except the radio system. Error codes are 01044 and 01302 from the infotainment unit. Latest service was just done 2 weeks ago at 147518km but they did not check the audio system specifically since I had not noticed these issues yet. This helps confirm its likely a recent problem with the antenna system rather than general electrical gremlins. Your antenna amplifier replacement sounds exactly like what I am experiencing. Will get it checked based on your feedback. Really helpful to know the approximate cost too.

Good to hear back and those error codes confirm my initial suspicion. The speed-dependent signal degradation is a classic symptom of a failing antenna amplifier, exactly what I experienced with my Golf. The error code 01044 specifically relates to the antenna circuit, while 01302 indicates communication issues between the radio and amplifier module. With these codes and the symptoms matching my case perfectly, I am now even more confident you are dealing with the same antenna amplifier failure. The fact that other electrical systems work fine also mirrors my experience. The antenna system is quite isolated, so radio interference and poor FM signal reception often occur without affecting other electronics. Just a heads up, make sure they check the wiring harness connecting to the amplifier when doing the repair. In my case, they found minor corrosion at the connector which they cleaned while replacing the amplifier unit. This extra step ensured optimal signal strength after the fix. The timing of your last service actually helps rule out any installation-related issues that could have caused the problem. When my amplifier failed, it was also a sudden occurrence rather than a gradual degradation of signal quality. Based on current parts prices, you should expect a similar repair cost around 250-280€ depending on labor rates.

Really appreciate the thorough follow-up. Your experience has been invaluable in narrowing down my issue. I have scheduled an appointment with my workshop for next week and specifically mentioned the antenna amplifier and connection harness as suspect components based on your feedback. The correlation between speed and signal strength you mentioned totally matches my symptoms. Makes perfect sense now why the static noise gets worse at higher speeds, something I had not connected before. Will ask them to do a full check of the amplifier circuit and clean any corroded connections while they are at it. The price range you quoted helps me budget for the repair and seems reasonable given the parts and work involved. Thanks for confirming the error codes too. Having another VW owner encounter the exact same fault codes and symptoms gives me confidence we have identified the root cause. Will update the forum once the repair is complete in case others run into similar poor signal issues with their VW audio systems.

I had a similar issue with my 2002 VW Golf TDI. As someone with moderate experience working on VW electronics, I initially thought it was just poor FM signal reception. The symptoms started exactly like yours, weak signal strength and constant static noise. The infotainment system showed unusual errors, particularly when driving at higher speeds. I first tried cleaning all ground connections, but the problem persisted. Took it to my regular workshop where they diagnosed a defective antenna assembly. The technician explained that the amplifier built into the antenna base had failed, causing interference with other vehicle electronics. They replaced the entire antenna unit including the amplifier module, which solved all issues completely. Total cost was 255€ including parts and labor. Since then, radio reception has been crystal clear with no more error messages. Before suggesting specific fixes, could you share: Does the signal quality change when the car is stationary vs moving? Are there any other electrical issues like power windows or central locking acting up? Have you noticed if the static noise gets worse when using other electronic accessories? Which error codes exactly does your system show? This information would help determine if you are dealing with the same antenna amplifier failure I experienced.
