VW Lupo ABS Light + Heavy Steering Wheel Shake Alert

Having trouble with my 2000 VW Lupo Diesel (32254km). The ABS warning light keeps coming on and the steering wheel shakes heavily while driving. Noticed it takes more force to turn the wheel too. Initially thought it was just low tire pressure since that warning also came on, but after checking my inflated tires everything seems normal there. Getting nervous about going back to the shop after a bad repair experience last time. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was the actual problem in your case and how much did the repair cost?

As the owner of a 1997 VW Polo Diesel, I encountered nearly identical symptoms. The shaking steering wheel combined with ABS warnings initially pointed to low tire pressure, but the issue persisted even with properly inflated tires. In my case, the mechanic discovered a damaged wheel bearing, which was causing uneven tire wear and triggering the ABS sensor. The bearing failure was creating excessive wheel movement, explaining both the heavy steering and the shaking. When left unchecked, this can become a serious safety concern affecting vehicle control and tire condition. During inspection, they also found a slow air leak from a faulty valve stem, which explained the occasional tire pressure warnings. Though the flat tire warnings were legitimate, they were secondary to the main bearing problem. The repair required replacing both the wheel bearing assembly and the valve stem. This is not a repair you should postpone, as it can lead to more extensive damage to the wheel hub and potentially cause tire failure if left unaddressed. Worth noting that wheel bearings often show these symptoms when failing, regardless of whether your tires are properly inflated or not. Getting this checked promptly will prevent more severe issues developing.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the wheel bearing issue. My VW Lupo had something similar happen last winter. The ABS light and steering problems match exactly what I went through. Just wondering, do you remember roughly how much you paid for the full repair? And has everything been running smoothly since the bearing and valve stem were replaced? My mechanic mentioned I should also keep an eye on tire pressure readings more regularly after this type of repair. Mine seems stable now but always good to know what to watch for since these older VWs can be tricky with their warning lights. Noticed any other related issues pop up that I should be aware of?

Just wanted to update on the costs and results, the full repair came to 280€ for replacing the faulty valve stem. Since fixing that persistent air leak, the tire sensor warnings have completely stopped. The tire pressure loss issues that were plaguing me earlier are now resolved. The mechanic did a thorough check of the tire pressure monitoring system while installing the new valve, and everything has been running perfectly for the past few months. No more false alarms or pressure warnings lighting up the dashboard. Keeping regular tabs on tire pressure is still good practice with these older models, but you should not see the constant warning lights anymore once the faulty valve is properly addressed. A properly sealed system will maintain stable pressure readings without those frustrating intermittent warnings. The repair was definitely worth it for the peace of mind alone. Just make sure to do a quick pressure check during seasonal tire changes to catch any potential issues early.

After seeing all the warning lights, I finally took my Lupo to a trusted mechanic this week. The wheel bearing replacement and valve stem fix cost me 310€ total. Shop did a complete inspection while they had it up on the lift. Turns out my tire pressure monitoring system was giving false readings because of that worn bearing. The tire sensor would get confused by the excess movement. Once they put in the new bearing and calibrated everything, all the warning lights cleared up. Been driving it for a few days now and what a difference. No more shaking or heavy steering. The ABS light stays off and the tire pressure readings are steady. Glad I did not wait longer since the mechanic showed me how badly worn that bearing was getting. This time the repair experience was much better than my last shop visit. They took time to explain everything and even showed me the old parts. Worth every euro to have it done right and be able to drive without worrying about those warning lights coming back on.
