VW Lupo Alarm System Failure: Troubleshooting Guide

Latest service was done at 116000km. The error code shows P1768. The LED still blinks but very irregularly. I checked all fuses but they seem fine. The alarm controller does not respond to the remote key anymore, though central locking still works. I did check the ground points and cleaned all visible connections, but the alarm system remains unresponsive. Even tried a manual alarm reset by disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes, which is a common fix for vehicle security issues. After your experience with similar symptoms, I will have my workshop check the siren module connections first. Always good to have a starting point for diagnosis rather than replacing parts out of nowhere. The irregular LED blinking does point towards a wiring issue rather than a complete alarm disarm module failure.

Thanks for those additional details about your Lupo. Your symptoms are remarkably similar to what I experienced with my Polo, especially the irregular LED blinking and non-responsive alarm controller while central locking still worked. The P1768 code combined with the intermittent LED activity strongly suggests a wiring connectivity issue. In my case, the irregular blinking was directly linked to the corroded siren module connections. The automotive alarm system would partially communicate, causing that erratic LED behavior. Before my workshop did the repair, I also tried the battery disconnect method without success. The signal problem persisted until they properly fixed the wiring. A thorough inspection revealed both the main connector was damaged and several wires had compromised insulation due to engine bay heat exposure. Based on the matching symptoms, I would focus on: 1. The siren module connector pins for corrosion 2. The wiring harness condition near heat sources 3. The ground connection at the siren mount point The repair should cost similarly to what I paid (around 95€) if the issue is indeed comparable. Having the workshop start their diagnostic at the siren module will likely save time and money.

The irregular LED behavior combined with your workshop experience with the Polo really helps narrow down the likely problem areas. Based on your detailed explanation, I will definitely have them focus on the siren module connections first when I take it in next week. Seems the automotive alarm system issues between VW models from that era share common wiring issue patterns. The fact that your repair resolved similar symptoms without needing a complete alarm disarm module replacement is encouraging. My central locking still working normally while the alarm fails does match the pattern you described. I have already cleaned the accessible ground points, but I suspect the hidden siren module connections might be the real culprit, just like in your case. Will ask them to specifically check the wiring harness condition near the engine bay heat zones and the connector pins for corrosion damage. Good to have a realistic cost estimate around 95€ for the repair if it turns out to be a similar vehicle security wiring problem. Really helps to go in with some knowledge of the typical failure points rather than letting them replace parts out of nowhere. Will update once I get it diagnosed and fixed.

Had a similar signal problem on my 2001 VW Polo diesel. As someone with moderate experience working on VWs, I can tell you these security breach issues are often related to worn connections. The fault detection system was showing similar symptoms, stored error code and complete alarm system failure. After some initial troubleshooting, my workshop found the wiring issue was due to a damaged plug connection at the siren module. The insulation had worn through, causing intermittent contact. The repair involved replacing the connector and resoldering some connections. Total cost was 95€ including diagnostic time. Been working perfectly since then. To give more specific advice for your Lupo: What error code is showing exactly? Also, does the alarm LED on the dash still blink? These details would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced with my Polo. Common failure points on these models usually involve: Siren module connections, Door locking system wiring, Control module ground points, Battery voltage sensor cables Let me know those additional details and I can share more relevant information about the repair process.
