VW Lupo Ignition Switch Causing Start and Stall Issues

Thanks for sharing that detailed experience. Had almost identical starting problems with my Lupo last winter. The starter motor would spin but engine wouldnt catch, plus unusual dashboard light flickering. Really interested to know how much your total repair ended up costing, my bill was pretty steep. Did you experience any other electrical gremlins since getting it fixed? After my repair, I noticed the central locking started acting up, wondering if that could be related to the ignition switch replacement.

Good news, since taking my Polo to the mechanic, the ignition switch issues have been completely resolved. The car starts perfectly every time I turn the key now. Total repair cost came to 52€ for replacing a blown fuse that was causing the electrical problems. Much cheaper than I initially feared. The engine start is now smooth and reliable, with no more dashboard flickering or starter motor issues. About your central locking concern, this is actually a separate system from the car ignition parts, so the problems are likely unrelated. However, both systems can be affected by general electrical gremlins, so it might be worth having the central locking checked separately. The key turn action feels much crisper now, which shows how worn the old ignition components had become. Getting these electrical issues fixed early definitely prevents bigger problems down the line. Just make sure your mechanic does a full check of the ignition system when diagnosing the central locking.

Just got back from the mechanic who fixed my Lupo starting issue. Turned out the ignition coil was completely shot and some wiring needed replacement. The car electronics diagnostic revealed a few other minor issues but the mechanic focused on the main starting problem first. Total bill came to 380€ including parts and labor. More than I wanted to spend but the car starts perfectly now, no more endless key turning or engine stalling. The starter motor engages right away and the engine runs smooth. The central locking issue was unrelated like you mentioned. Mechanic said it just needs a new actuator which I will get fixed next month. Really glad I got this sorted before winter, much better than being stranded somewhere with starting problems. The whole repair took about 4 hours but the shop had the parts in stock which saved time. They also cleaned all the electrical connections while they were at it. Money well spent considering how reliably it starts now.

Recently fixed a similar issue on my 2004 VW Polo TDI. The symptoms matched exactly, intermittent starting problems when turning the ignition key and rough running once started. After thorough diagnostics, multiple problems were identified: The main culprit was a failing ignition coil, but the issue also revealed damaged wiring to the glow plugs. The dashboard lights would sometimes flicker during starting attempts, which indicated electrical system problems. The repair required: Replacing the ignition switch assembly, Rewiring the glow plug circuit, Installing new glow plugs, Cleaning electrical connections This was a serious repair job that took several hours to complete. The starting issues worsened over time, eventually leading to complete failure to start. For your Lupo, since the symptoms are nearly identical, suggest getting the ignition system checked soon before being stranded. Worth noting that these electrical issues are common on early 2000s VW diesels once they pass 100000km. Regular inspection of car electronics can help catch these problems early. The ignition switch typically shows warning signs months before complete failure.
