VW Passat ABS Failure Points to Faulty Sensor

Had my latest service 2 months ago and currently at 25666km. After checking with the mechanic, my problem was different. The yaw rate sensor was actually at fault, not the lateral acceleration sensor. The electronic stability system started working normally after the sensor replacement. Vehicle stability was fully restored and no further issues occurred. Getting a diagnostic scan early helped identify the correct component, saving time and money.

Thanks for the update on your Passat issue. This matches what I eventually discovered in my Arteon as well, the yaw rate sensor can often be mistaken for lateral acceleration sensor problems since they both affect vehicle stability systems similarly. After getting my control unit replaced, I had another incident six months later with similar symptoms. Had it checked and it turned out to be the yaw rate sensor too. The electronic stability system showed identical warning signs as your case. The repair cost was lower than the control unit job, around 400€ including recalibration. The wheel alignment also needed adjustment to ensure proper electronic control system function after the sensor replacement. Good to hear you got it sorted quickly. These sensors are critical for proper ABS and stability control operation, so prompt diagnosis really does help prevent more extensive repairs later. Just keep monitoring for any unusual ABS behavior during the next few services, sometimes these sensors can indicate early wear in other components of the stability system.

Thank you everyone who replied. I want to close this thread with my final update: My Passat is now running perfectly after 3 months since the yaw rate sensor replacement. The electronic stability control and ABS systems show no warning lights or error codes. Total repair cost was 380€ which included a full system diagnostic scan and sensor calibration. The safety warning messages have completely disappeared. For anyone searching with similar symptoms: having both ABS and stability control warnings does not always mean a lateral sensor problem. The yaw rate sensor can trigger identical warnings, as proven in my case. Getting a proper diagnostic scan helped identify the correct issue first time. The steering angle and vehicle stability systems now work flawlessly during all driving conditions. Would recommend anyone experiencing these warnings to have them checked promptly to prevent more serious electronic control system issues developing.

As someone with some experience in electronic control systems, I faced a similar issue with my 2021 VW Arteon Hybrid last year. The symptoms matched yours, ABS warning light and electronic stability system malfunction. Initially, a diagnostic scan pointed to the lateral sensor, but further testing revealed an affected control unit that was causing irregular readings. The steering angle calibration was also affected as a result. The workshop performed: 1. Complete diagnostic scan of all systems 2. Testing of the ABS control unit connections 3. Replacement of the faulty control unit 4. System recalibration Total repair time was about 4 hours. The final cost was 1000€ including parts and labor. To provide more specific guidance for your case, could you share: Current mileage on your Passat, Any recent work done on the braking system, Whether you notice any specific driving conditions that trigger the warning, If there are any other warning lights active This would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced or might be something different in the ABS system.
