VW Phaeton ABS Light On, Speed Sensor Troubles

Having trouble with my 2005 VW Phaeton (100420km, gasoline). The ABS warning light stays on and the traction control seems unreliable. Pretty sure its a speedometer sensor issue since the ABS system stopped working properly. Looking for advice from anyone who had similar problems, how much did repairs cost at your mechanic and was it actually the sensor? Got burned by a mechanic recently so trying to be better informed this time. Thanks for any input.

Had a similar issue with my 2008 VW Passat last winter. The speedometer sensor malfunction triggered both ABS and traction control warnings. Initial diagnosis pointed to a faulty wheel speed sensor, but after deeper testing, the ECM revealed the ABS control unit was completely defective. The wheel speed sensors link directly to the ABS module, affecting both speedometer readings and traction control. When the control unit fails, it typically causes multiple system malfunctions simultaneously. This turned out to be a serious repair requiring complete replacement of the ABS control unit and reprogramming of the new module to sync with the transmission and ECM systems. The repair shop had to order an OEM control unit since aftermarket versions were proving unreliable. The entire process took about 3 days including testing. While waiting for parts, they found additional corrosion near the ABS sensor wiring harness which also needed attention. My recommendation would be to get a proper diagnostic scan first. The speedometer sensor might be the culprit, but given the multiple system warnings, prepare for the possibility of a more complex ABS control unit issue.

Thanks for sharing your repair experience. That sounds exactly like what happened with mine. Did you remember how much the total repair cost was in your case? I also had to wait for parts, but luckily no corrosion issues in my case. The input from the speedometer was definitely the root cause, just like your mechanic found. The odometer still works fine though, which is strange. After fixing the ABS control unit malfunction, has your car been running without any issues? I want to make sure I wont face any additional problems down the line.

The total repair came to 1000€ for the ABS control unit replacement and system reprogramming. Since getting it fixed, my car has been running flawlessly, no more warning lights or speed signal faults. The initial diagnosis matched yours, with the speed sensor input causing the malfunction, but replacing the control unit resolved all issues. Unlike some repairs where problems can resurface, this one was a permanent fix. The ABS, traction control, and all related systems work perfectly now. The ECM readings are stable and the car drives like new. Your working odometer despite the speed sensor issue is actually quite common, they often operate on separate circuits within the system. While it was an expensive repair, the peace of mind from having a properly functioning ABS system makes it worthwhile. Just make sure your mechanic uses OEM parts and performs a complete system diagnostic after installation.

Thanks for the advice. Wanted to share how my repair went in case others run into this. Took it to a new mechanic who specializes in VW diagnostics. They confirmed the ABS control unit needed replacement, just like suggested here. Cost me 950€ total including labor and programming. The ABS warning light turned off right after the repair and the traction control works perfectly now. Speed sensor readings are accurate and stable. My mechanic showed me the diagnostic readings before and after, the malfunction was clearly visible in the data. Really glad I asked here first since it helped me understand what to expect. The repair took 2 days because they had to order the control unit, but everything works great now. No more warning lights or traction issues when driving. The speedometer and all related systems have been working flawlessly for the past few weeks. Definitely worth getting it fixed properly with OEM parts rather than trying cheaper alternatives. The transmission and ABS now work together perfectly, just like they should.
