VW Phaeton AC System Failed: Compressor & Switch Guide

Had the same issue on a 2010 VW Touareg TDI. The HVAC system completely stopped working, showing error codes related to undervoltage protection. The A/C system was shutting down to prevent damage to the compressor. The root cause was a failing belt tensioner that wasnt maintaining proper tension on the serpentine belt. This caused intermittent power loss to the A/C compressor. The pressure switch was detecting these voltage fluctuations and shutting down the system as a protective measure. The repair involved: Complete belt tensioner replacement, New serpentine belt installation, Pressure switch testing, Full A/C system diagnosis, Refrigerant level check This was a serious issue that required immediate attention since the belt tensioner also affects other critical engine components. The repair prevented potential damage to the A/C compressor and other belt-driven accessories. Watch out for mechanics who just want to recharge the refrigerant without checking the mechanical components. The pressure switch and compressor issues are often symptoms of underlying mechanical problems.

Thanks for sharing that experience with the Touareg. It sounds very similar to what Im dealing with on my Phaeton. The pressure sensor shutting down the HVAC system makes perfect sense given the symptoms. I have an appointment scheduled next week for diagnosis. How much did you end up paying for the complete repair? Also curious if youve had any other air conditioning issues since getting it fixed?

After getting everything sorted out, the A/C compressor and HVAC system have been working flawlessly. The total repair cost came to 240€, which covered fixing the undervoltage issues that were causing the system to shut down. The AC relay and electrical connections were also checked during the service. Looking back, having a proper diagnosis was key. Many shops might have just recharged the refrigerant without addressing the actual electrical problem. The pressure sensor was functioning correctly by protecting the system when voltage dropped too low. No other air conditioning problems have occurred since the repair, which was about 8 months ago. The investment was worth it to prevent potential damage to the A/C compressor and related components. Make sure your mechanic thoroughly checks the electrical system, particularly the voltage supply to the compressor. Consider asking for a detailed check of the relay switch and pressure sensors while they have it in for diagnosis. These components often work together when there are system shutdown issues.

Thanks everyone for the detailed feedback. I went ahead with the repair yesterday and wanted to share my experience. The mechanic found the belt tensioner was indeed failing, causing the compressor to get irregular power. They also discovered a minor refrigerant leak at one of the connection points. The AC relay was tested and showed signs of wear, so they replaced that too. Total cost came to 320€ including: New belt tensioner, Belt replacement, AC relay switch, Refrigerant recharge, System pressure test, Labor The HVAC system is now working perfectly. The air is properly cold and the compressor engages smoothly without any shutdown issues. Glad I got this fixed before it caused damage to other components. The shop was thorough in their diagnosis and took time to explain each issue. Much better experience than my previous mechanic who just wanted to do a quick refrigerant recharge.
