VW Phaeton Glow Plug Malfunction: Repair Guide & Costs
Summary of the thread
The initial problem involved a 2005 VW Phaeton diesel experiencing preheating issues, with the preheating lamp staying on continuously during cold starts and a stored error code. The likely cause was faulty glow plugs, a common issue in VW diesel engines, which can lead to rough idling and starting troubles in cold weather. The recommended solution was to replace the entire set of glow plugs and the control module, rather than individual plugs, to ensure reliable performance. Seeking a second opinion from a VW specialist was advised, as proper diagnosis and complete replacement are crucial for resolving the issue effectively.

Thanks for sharing that experience. Had exactly those symptoms on my Phaeton too, rough idle and starting troubles during cold start. Finally got it sorted with a complete glow plug replacement like you mentioned. How much did the repair actually cost you? Just curious if prices have changed much since I had mine done. Also, have you noticed any other electrical gremlins pop up since the repair? Sometimes these issues can be related to other control modules.

Good you asked about the repair costs. Just had my Touareg diesel engine fixed last month, total came to 440€ for replacing the complete glow plug set and control module. Since the repair, cold starts have been perfect with no check engine lights or electrical issues. The investment was worth it as the engine combustion is now much smoother, especially during cold weather. No more rough idle or starting problems that typically plague these diesel car systems when glow plugs fail. My mechanic mentioned prices for these repairs have stayed fairly stable over the years, though parts availability can sometimes affect costs. The most important thing is getting a proper diagnosis and replacing all components as a set rather than trying to fix individual plugs. Regarding other electrical issues, absolutely none since the repair. The glow plug failure was an isolated problem and once fixed, the engine performs exactly as it should. The engine management system shows no error codes and cold start preheating works perfectly now.

Thanks for the helpful advice. Wanted to share how my repair turned out. Took it to a VW specialist last week who properly diagnosed the issue. The total repair came to 480€ which included a full set of glow plugs and the control module. The mechanic was thorough and showed me the worn glow plugs after removal. The engine light cleared immediately after the repair and cold starts are now perfect. Fuel efficiency has notably improved and the diesel engine runs much smoother during morning starts. The shop completed everything in about 3.5 hours, which seems reasonable considering they had to remove the intake manifold to access all the plugs. No engine misfire or preheating issues since the fix. Really glad I went with a complete replacement rather than trying to save money fixing individual plugs. The engine performance difference is significant and its good knowing all components are new and properly matched. Worth every cent to have it done right. Much better experience than my previous mechanic who wanted to just replace one plug and didnt even check the control module.

Had similar glow plug issues on my 2008 VW Touareg V6 TDI. The engine light came on during cold starts, and the preheating lamp stayed illuminated. Diagnosis revealed two defective glow plugs causing engine misfire during cold weather. The repair involved replacing all glow plugs as a set, plus the glow plug control module which was also faulty. This is a known issue with these VW diesel engines. The job requires removing the intake manifold to access all plugs properly. While not immediately dangerous, failing glow plugs significantly impact cold start performance and fuel efficiency. Running the engine with faulty glow plugs can eventually lead to starting problems and poor combustion. Worth getting a second opinion, as proper diagnosis is crucial. Some shops might replace individual plugs, but replacing the complete set with the control module is the more reliable solution. The Phaeton uses similar glow plug system to the Touareg, so repair process should be comparable. The repair took about 4 hours at the workshop. Consider finding a shop specializing in VW diesels, as they will be familiar with these common issues.
