Thanks for sharing your Golf experience! I'm currently dealing with similar transmission performance issues in my Polo, same erratic shifting and warning lights you described. The mechanic suspects my automatic transmission might need similar repairs. Did you end up having any other transmission problems after the repair was done? And if you remember, what did the full fix cost? Would help me get an idea of what to budget for.

Thanks for asking about the follow-up. After fixing the transmission oil issue and undervoltage problem in my Golf, the car has been running perfectly. The transmission problems completely disappeared once the worn hydraulic fluid was replaced and the electrical system was repaired. The total cost breakdown for my automatic gearbox repair came to 240€, which covered diagnosing and fixing the undervoltage issue that was affecting the transmission control module. The car transmission has been shifting smoothly ever since, with no warning lights or emergency mode incidents. The mechanic explained that low voltage was causing the transmission control unit to malfunction, which led to the erratic shifting patterns we both experienced. Make sure your shop checks the electrical system along with the automatic transmission fluid levels, as these issues can be related. My advice would be to get it checked soon, waiting too long with transmission problems can lead to more expensive repairs down the line. The investment in proper maintenance has definitely paid off in my case.

Thanks to everyone for the advice! I wanted to share how my repair went. Took the car to the mechanic yesterday and the diagnosis matched what was discussed here. The slipping transmission turned out to be caused by both degraded transmission oil and an electrical issue. The inspection revealed contaminated transmission fluid and a faulty voltage regulator affecting the transmission performance. The mechanic completed: Full transmission oil change, New filter installation, Voltage regulator replacement, System recalibration Total repair cost came to 320€, slightly more than expected but worth it. The automatic gearbox is now shifting perfectly and all warning lights are off. No more emergency mode problems. Most importantly, addressing these transmission problems early prevented more serious automatic transmission damage. The mechanic mentioned catching it at this stage likely saved me from a much costlier repair down the road. For anyone facing similar issues, dont wait too long to get it checked out. Quick action can make a big difference in both repair costs and preventing further damage.

Had this exact transmission problem with my 2004 VW Golf TDI. The slipping transmission symptoms started similarly, erratic shifting and emergency mode engagement. The automatic transmission warning stayed on constantly. After inspection, it turned out the hydraulic fluid was severely degraded and contaminated with metal particles. The transmission problems were caused by worn clutch plates inside the automatic gearbox that had contaminated the fluid. The repair required: Complete transmission fluid flush, New transmission filter, Replacement of worn clutch pack, Recalibration of transmission control module This was a serious issue that needed immediate attention. Continuing to drive with degraded transmission fluid could have led to complete transmission failure. The worn clutch plates were already causing internal damage. For your Polo, given the similar transmission design and age, I recommend getting it checked soon. The automatic gearbox in these VW diesels needs regular maintenance to prevent premature wear. Low or degraded hydraulic fluid is often the root cause of transmission problems in these models. The repair took 3 days total at the shop. Most important is catching it early before more extensive damage occurs to the automatic transmission components.
