VW Polo Brake Switch Fix: Cost & Common Solutions

I have a frustrating issue with my 2015 VW Polo diesel (35015km). The brake lights are acting up, throwing error messages both in the computer and infotainment system. I suspect its a faulty brake switch, but my last mechanic visit wasnt great, so Im hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar brake light switch problems? Looking for advice on whether this is a common issue and roughly what I should expect to pay for the repair. Would really appreciate hearing about your experiences with this type of brake switch replacement.

Had the exact same brake light switch issue on my 2012 VW Golf TDI last winter. The symptoms match perfectly, unusual brake light errors and dashboard warnings. The automotive switch failure is a known weak point in these models. The brake switch replacement was necessary because the internal contacts wear out over time, causing intermittent electrical connections. This is actually a safety-critical component since it controls both brake lights and cruise control functionality. The repair itself is straightforward for an experienced mechanic. They need to access the brake pedal assembly, disconnect the old switch, and install the updated version of the brake switch. The new parts are redesigned to be more durable. I took mine to a VW specialist when it happened. The whole brake switch replacement process took under an hour, including diagnostic confirmation. This is not a serious repair job, but it should be done promptly since faulty brake lights create safety risks. The key is finding a shop familiar with VW brake switch issues. They should be able to quickly diagnose and confirm if its the switch rather than a wiring problem. Make sure they use OEM parts for the replacement.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I had the same electrical issue with my Polo last spring, and replacing the brake switch fixed it completely. The diagnostic messages were identical to what you described. Been driving without any brake system problems since the repair, but Id be curious to know what you ended up paying. My total came to 180€ including parts and labor, which seemed reasonable given how critical the brake switch is for safety. Did you get hit with any additional costs during the fix? Also wondering if youve had any other electrical gremlins pop up since getting it sorted.

Just wanted to update, turns out it was actually user error in my case, not a faulty brake switch at all. After inspecting the brake pedal assembly, the mechanic found the electrical connection was fine, but the switch needed a simple readjustment. No parts replacement was needed. The vehicle safety inspection revealed the brake switch was functioning correctly, just slightly out of alignment. Since the tail light and brake system warnings were caused by this minor misalignment, the fix cost nothing. The mechanic simply adjusted the position and recalibrated the switch. Been driving for over a year now without any electrical issues or warning messages. The brake lights work perfectly, and the cruise control functions as intended. Pretty relieved it wasnt a more serious electrical issue requiring parts replacement like in your case. Good to hear your repair resolved the problem, even though you had to pay for a new switch. These brake pedal components are critical for safety, so its worth getting them fixed properly when issues arise.

Thanks for the input. After reading your experiences, I finally got the brake light issue sorted last week. Found a well-reviewed VW specialist shop that correctly diagnosed the faulty brake switch. The mechanic was upfront about everything, showed me the worn contacts on the old switch and explained why the replacement was necessary for proper brake light function. Took about 45 minutes total and cost 165€ including parts and labor, which seems fair considering the vehicle safety aspect. The tail light warnings disappeared immediately after the brake switch replacement. Been driving for a week now without any dashboard errors or electrical issues. The brake pedal feels more responsive too, and the cruise control works perfectly again. Really glad I decided to get it fixed rather than trying to live with the intermittent warnings. Having properly functioning brake lights definitely gives peace of mind. Would definitely recommend getting this sorted quickly if anyone else notices similar warning messages, its a relatively simple fix that makes a big difference for safety.
