Last serviced 2 months ago at 113761km Thanks for the detailed response about the head unit failure. Mine started acting up gradually with inconsistent volume control and occasional speaker crackle for about 2 weeks before complete failure. Steering wheel controls are also dead now. After reading about your experience, I pulled out the unit to check, it is a RCD510 model. No visible damage but there is a slight burnt electronics smell. The quoted diagnostic fee at my regular shop is 150€, but your repair cost gives me a good reference point before deciding whether to fix or replace the sound system entirely. Will report back once I get a proper diagnosis. Really hoping it is just the main board like in your case.

Thanks for the update, those symptoms match exactly what I experienced, especially the burnt electronics smell with the RCD510. The gradual decline with volume control issues and speaker crackle is a classic sign of the main board failing. The diagnostic fee seems reasonable. When mine was repaired, they found scorch marks on the main circuit board near the volume control chip. The burnt smell you mentioned suggests similar component failure. The head unit repair was definitely worth it compared to a full replacement. After 2 years, my sound system still works perfectly with no volume issues or audio distortion. Make sure they use the updated board revision if they go the repair route, it has better heat management than the original. One tip: while the unit is out, have them check the wiring harness connection points. My repair shop found slight corrosion there which they cleaned up during the service. This helps prevent future audio issues. Keep us posted on the diagnosis. Based on the matching symptoms, I expect youll be looking at a similar 700-800€ repair cost range for a proper fix of the head unit.

I pulled the unit and took it to the shop today. Diagnosis confirmed exactly what you described, failed main board with visible burn marks near the volume control components. Really glad I checked here first since your experience helped me know what to expect. They quoted 780€ for the complete repair using the updated board version you mentioned. Definitely going ahead with the fix since that is way cheaper than replacing the whole sound system. They will also clean the wiring connections while everything is apart. Good to hear your repair has held up for 2 years with no audio quality issues. The gradual speaker crackle and volume problems were driving me crazy before it died completely. Should have the car back next week with everything sorted. Thanks again for the detailed help. Will update once I get it back and confirm the sound system is working properly again.

Had almost the exact same issue with my 2013 VW Golf GTI. As someone who has dealt with several car audio problems, this sounds very familiar. The symptoms match perfectly, complete head unit failure with no display or audio output through speakers. After checking the basic fuses like you did, I initially suspected faulty wiring or a blown amp. Took it to a specialized car audio workshop where they diagnosed a failed main board in the head unit. The dashboard controls stopped working because the entire unit had shut down, not due to separate wiring issues. They confirmed this is a somewhat common failure point in VW audio systems from that era. The repair cost me 725€ total, including diagnostic work and replacement of the defective display unit. Much better than replacing the entire system. To help diagnose your specific case, could you share: Whether you notice any speaker crackle before the system died completely, If the steering wheel audio controls still work, The exact head unit model number (should be visible when you pull it out), Whether you had any warning signs before the total failure These details would help determine if yours is the same issue I experienced. The repair was worth it since the replacement parts they used were more reliable than the original components.
