VW Scirocco MAF Sensor Failure Symptoms & Fixes

Last service was done at 82000km and my air filter was replaced then. No modifications or previous MAF replacements on the car. Running standard 95 octane fuel. The stalling and smoke symptoms you described match exactly what I am experiencing. Getting about 20% worse fuel economy lately too. My check engine light started flickering before staying on permanently. After reading your detailed experience, I am more convinced its the mass air flow sensor. Will have the air intake system checked just to be safe, but seems I should prepare for a MAF replacement cost similar to yours.

Thanks for providing those details. The symptoms you describe are even more similar to what I experienced than I initially thought. That 20% increase in fuel consumption matches almost exactly what I saw before replacing my MAF sensor. One quick check you can do before heading to the workshop: carefully disconnect the MAF sensor connector and start the car. If it runs smoother, its a strong indicator of sensor failure, since the ECU will default to pre-programmed values instead of using faulty MAF readings. Just be careful when checking the air intake system, the MAF sensor is quite sensitive. When I checked mine before replacement, I noticed some contamination on the sensor wire, which is common with these units. Since your maintenance history is similar to what mine was (regular services, stock setup), and you are using the same fuel grade, I am even more confident its your MAF sensor causing these issues. The flickering check engine light before staying on permanently is particularly telling, experienced the exact same sequence. Given current parts prices, you should expect repair costs in the 350-400€ range. The actual sensor typically runs about 250€, plus labor for testing and installation.

Your suggestion about testing the MAF sensor by disconnecting it is really helpful. Just tried it and the engine actually did run more smoothly, which confirms what you said about sensor failure. The stalling and rough idle improved noticeably. Given all the matching symptoms, the fuel economy issues, engine stalling, and especially that identical check engine light behavior, I am now certain its the mass air flow sensor. Will book it in next week for replacement. The cost estimate helps with planning too. Hoping my final bill stays around 400€ like yours did. At least its worth it to fix these symptoms and get back to normal fuel consumption. Really appreciate you walking me through your experience with such detail. Just wondering, did you need to do any kind of reset or relearn procedure after your sensor replacement? Want to know what to expect during the repair.

Had almost the exact same symptoms on my 2015 Golf GTI last winter. For those unfamiliar with these issues, a failing mass air flow sensor can really mess up your air-fuel ratio and cause serious performance decline. Started with increased fuel consumption, then progressed to unusual engine stalling especially at idle. The air filter was clean, but the engine would still run rough and smoke under acceleration. After some basic troubleshooting failed, took it to a workshop. They confirmed the MAF sensor was defective through diagnostic testing. Total repair cost was 365€ including parts and labor. The improvement was immediate, stable idle, normal fuel consumption, and no more smoke. Would need to know a few things about your Scirocco to give more specific advice: Current mileage, Any previous MAF sensor replacements, Any recent engine modifications, Type of fuel you typically use, When you last changed the air filter These details would help determine if your symptoms truly match a MAF sensor failure or possibly point to other issues.
