VW Scirocco Starting Issues: Bad Switch vs Other Causes

Thanks for sharing your experience. Had very similar problems with my Scirocco last winter with the exact same symptoms. The car ignition was really unreliable, especially during cold starts. Your crankshaft sensor fix caught my attention since that was part of my problem too, but in my case it was combined with a corroded wiring harness. Just wondering, do you remember roughly what you paid for the full repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other starting issues popping up?

Had the same repairs completed about 2 months ago and happy to report the ignition problems are completely resolved. After seeing a mechanic, they confirmed the ignition switch was faulty and also found a blown fuse in the starter motor circuit. The fix was straightforward, replacing the defective fuse cost 52€ and the car electronics have been working perfectly since. The starter motor engages smoothly every time I turn the key now, no more of those frustrating failed starts or rough running issues. My car starts reliably in all conditions now, which is a huge relief compared to the uncertainty I faced before. The ignition coil readings are also back to normal according to the diagnostic scan they ran after the repair. If your symptoms match what I experienced, definitely worth getting it checked soon before it potentially leaves you stranded somewhere. The peace of mind from having reliable starting is worth the repair cost.

Thanks for the advice. After reading through the responses, I decided to take my Scirocco to a different mechanic. Turned out to be a smart move. The new shop did a thorough check of the car electronics and found multiple issues, a failing ignition coil and some damaged wiring that was causing the engine start problems. The total repair came to 480€, which included parts and labor. While not cheap, the dashboard lights and engine start are now working perfectly. No more rough running or cutting out. The starter motor engages smoothly every time. The mechanic explained everything clearly and even showed me the worn parts they replaced. Much better experience than my previous shop. Been driving for about 3 weeks now without any issues. Definitely recommend getting strange starting problems checked out quickly, catching it early probably saved me from bigger problems down the road.

I experienced nearly identical symptoms with my 2009 VW Golf GTI TSI. The rough running and unusual cutting out turned out to be more than just an ignition switch issue. After thorough diagnostics, the problems stemmed from a failing ignition coil pack combined with a faulty crankshaft position sensor. The car electronics showed multiple fault codes when scanned. The dashboard lights would sometimes flicker during starting attempts, which was a key indicator. The starting issue became progressively worse over two weeks, especially during cold starts. The repair involved: Replacing all ignition coils, Installing new crankshaft position sensor, Cleaning throttle body, Testing electrical connections This was classified as a serious repair since the failing components could have left me stranded or caused engine damage if ignored. The symptoms worsened quickly from occasional starting problems to frequent stalling. Before visiting a mechanic, you can check: 1. Battery terminals for corrosion 2. Fuse box for any blown fuses related to ignition 3. Listen for clicking sounds when turning the ignition key 4. Note if dashboard lights behave normally during starting A professional diagnosis is recommended given the complexity of modern car electronics and ignition systems.
