VW Sharan Diesel Cold Start Performance Issues Fixed

Running my 2017 VW Sharan diesel poorly during cold starts. The engine seems sluggish and fuel consumption has gone up noticeably. The check engine light triggered a fault code. I suspect the PTC heater might be the culprit since these issues mainly occur during the warming-up phase. Current mileage is 115613km. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms? Looking for advice before heading to a mechanic since my last repair experience wasnt great.

During winter with my 2014 VW Touran 2.0 TDI I faced nearly identical symptoms. The electrical fault turned out to be the PTC auxiliary heater, which is crucial for the heating system during cold starts on diesel engines. The temperature control issues caused increased fuel consumption because the engine needed more energy to reach optimal operating temperature. The blower motor kept pushing cold air since the PTC heater failed to warm it properly. This required replacing the complete auxiliary heater unit. It was a serious repair that needed specialized diagnostic equipment to properly reset the system afterward. Without the auxiliary heater working correctly, diesel engines struggle especially in cold conditions, leading to poor performance and higher emissions. The symptoms matched exactly: sluggish cold starts, increased fuel use, and engine management light. The auxiliary heater helps warm up the engine faster, improving efficiency and reducing wear. Once replaced, the cold start performance returned to normal and fuel consumption dropped back to expected levels. This is a known issue on several VW diesel models from that generation. Getting it diagnosed and fixed promptly prevents potential damage to other engine components.

After seeing that this points to the PTC heater issue I had last winter, I can confirm my VW Sharan showed the same problems. The heat not working properly during cold starts was really annoying, especially since I had to wait much longer for the engine to warm up. The heating element replacement sorted everything out, engine runs smooth now and fuel economy is back to normal. The check engine light hasnt come back since. Could you share how much the repair cost in your case? Also wondering if you noticed any other issues popping up after getting the heater repair done? Always good to know what to watch out for with these VW heating systems.

Good news, after dealing with the same heater repair on my Touran, I can confirm the fix has been completely successful. The total cost came to 350€ for replacing the defective electric auxiliary heater, which restored proper heating system function. Since the repair, my vehicle has performed flawlessly, no additional electrical faults or heating issues have emerged. The engine warms up normally now and fuel consumption remains stable. The blower motor delivers properly heated air right from cold starts. The investment was worth it as it resolved all the initial symptoms, no more sluggish performance or check engine warnings. These VW heating systems typically work reliably once the faulty PTC heater is replaced with a new unit. Just keep an eye on cold start behavior and heating performance during regular maintenance checks.

I finally got the PTC heater replaced at my local garage last week. The mechanics diagnostic confirmed what everyone suggested about the auxiliary heating system. The repair took about 3 hours and cost me 380€ total including parts and labor. The difference is remarkable, no more cold air issues during startup and the engine runs perfectly from cold starts now. Fuel consumption dropped back to normal levels within the first few tanks. The electrical fault codes have cleared completely. The mechanic also checked the rest of the heating system components while doing the work. Everything else looked good with no signs of related problems. He mentioned these heating element failures are quite common on these VW models. Really glad I got this sorted before winter. The engine feels much healthier and more responsive now, especially during the warm-up phase. Thanks for helping point me in the right direction with this repair.
