VW Sharan Diesel Stalling Fix Needed, Sensor Issue

Had similar symptoms on my 2016 VW Touran TDI. The problem started with intermittent stalling and check engine light warnings. After sensor testing, it turned out the encoder wheel on the camshaft was worn, causing the camshaft sensor to read incorrect signals. The engine control unit was getting faulty position data, leading to timing issues. This explains why simply replacing the camshaft sensor alone did not solve your problem. The encoder wheel and sensor work as a pair, if the wheel is damaged, a new sensor will still read incorrect data. The repair required removing the valve cover to replace both the encoder wheel and camshaft sensor. This was a serious issue that needed immediate attention since incorrect timing can cause engine damage. The crankshaft sensor was also tested during diagnosis to ensure the entire timing system was functioning properly. Based on your symptoms, recommend having the encoder wheel inspected. When the engine is trying to start, the camshaft sensor relies on those wheel markings to sync timing. Worn markings explain the starting issues and stalling you describe.

Thanks for sharing that detailed insight about the encoder wheel issue. It makes a lot of sense given my car stalling and starting problems. Had similar symptoms recently, including the check engine light coming on repeatedly. Wondering if you remember the total repair cost when they replaced both the encoder wheel and camshaft sensor? Has your car been running smoothly since the fix or did you notice any other engine misfire issues afterwards?

After getting the encoder wheel and camshaft sensor replaced in my Touran, the car has been running perfectly with no engine misfire issues. The repair cost totaled 695€, which included both parts and labor. The check engine light cleared up immediately and hasn't returned. The ignition timing is now spot-on, with none of the previous stalling or rough idle problems. The mechanic confirmed the faulty camshaft position readings were causing the engine control unit to get confused. Since fixing both components together rather than just the sensor alone, the engine runs like new. Been about 8 months now with zero issues, no more stalling, no warning lights, and starts perfectly every time. Just make sure they check both parts as a system. The encoder wheel damage was the root cause in my case, which is why just replacing the camshaft sensor alone often wont solve the problem completely.

Thanks everyone for the help. Finally got my car fixed last week. Found a different mechanic who actually took the time to properly diagnose the problem. Just like mentioned here, it turned out both the encoder wheel and camshaft position sensor needed replacement. Total repair came to 720€ which seems fair compared to what others paid. The check engine light is now off and car starts perfectly. No more stalling issues at idle either. What a relief to have this sorted after months of uncertainty. The mechanic showed me the old encoder wheel and the wear marks were clearly visible. Made me understand why the previous sensor-only repair didnt work. Good lesson learned about getting a complete diagnosis rather than just replacing parts. Just wanted to close this thread and share the outcome in case anyone else runs into similar problems with their VW. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction with the encoder wheel issue.
