VW Sharan Wiper System Failure: Common Causes & Fixes

My windshield wipers stopped working completely on my 2004 VW Sharan TDI (126000km). The error light came on and my mechanic found a stored error code. Last time I had work done, they messed up a simple repair, so I am hesitant to go back. Could the wiper switch be the culprit here? Has anyone dealt with similar wiper motor or wiring harness issues on a Sharan? Looking for recommendations on common causes and reliable fixes before I take it to a shop again.

Had a similar issue on my 2007 VW Touran TDI. The windshield wipers stopped responding and the warning light appeared. After diagnostic testing, it turned out the wiper switch in the steering column had a damaged internal connector. The wiper switch is a common failure point on these VW models. The connection between the switch and the wiring harness can deteriorate over time, causing intermittent or complete wiper failure. In my case, moisture had gotten into the steering column connector, causing corrosion. The repair required replacing the complete wiper switch assembly and cleaning the connecting terminals. While not a serious mechanical issue, it does require specific diagnostic equipment to properly identify the fault codes and verify the repair. Based on your symptoms, start by having the wiper switch tested. If the switch tests good, then investigate the wiring harness near the motor as vibration can sometimes cause wire breaks. The motor itself is generally reliable on these models unless exposed to excessive water intrusion. Make sure any shop you choose has experience with VW electrical systems and proper diagnostic tools. This type of repair requires attention to detail when working with the electrical connectors in the steering column area.

Thanks for confirming it was the wiper switch causing the problem. I just had mine replaced last month and the windshield wipers are working perfectly now. The symptoms were exactly as you described, complete failure and warning lights. The wiring harness turned out to be fine in my case. Would you mind sharing what the repair cost you? My bill seemed a bit high and I am curious to compare. Also wondering if you have had any other electrical gremlins pop up since the repair? Sometimes these steering column issues can affect other systems like the turn signal or cruise control.

Glad I could help identify the wiper switch issue. After seeing my mechanic last week, they found a loose connection in the steering column wiring that was causing the wiper switch malfunction. The total repair came to 95€, which included testing the wiring harness and fixing the faulty connection. Much cheaper than replacing the entire switch assembly like I initially thought might be needed. Since the repair, all electrical systems are working perfectly. The wiper motor responds immediately, and I have not experienced any other steering column electrical issues. The turn signals and cruise control continue to work as they should. Sometimes these electrical problems really do come down to simple connection issues rather than needing major component replacements. Your experience with the complete switch replacement might explain the higher repair cost. The diagnostic work to isolate electrical faults in the steering column can be time-consuming, which affects labor charges. At least both our wipers are working properly now, having reliable wipers is crucial for safe driving.

I finally got my wipers fixed and wanted to share my experience. After getting tired of dealing with complete wiper failure, I took it to a new mechanic who specializes in VW electrical systems. The total repair cost was 280€, which included a new wiper switch and labor. The mechanic showed me the old switch from the steering column, it was pretty corroded inside. They also checked the entire wiring harness while they had it apart, which gave me peace of mind. The windshield wipers now work perfectly, and as a bonus, my turn signal clicking sound is clearer than before. What impressed me most was their thorough testing after the repair. They ran diagnostics to clear all error codes and tested every wiper blade speed setting. No more warning lights or issues since then. While the cost was higher than expected, having a properly working wiper system is worth it for safety. Much better experience than my previous mechanic who always seemed to create new problems while fixing others.
