VW T-Cross Audio Issues: Bad Antenna Ground Alert
Summary of the thread
A 2022 VW T-Cross experienced audio system issues, including error messages and poor radio signal strength, suspected to be due to a bad antenna ground or interference. The problem was diagnosed as water damage and corrosion at the antenna base, affecting signal quality. The solution involved replacing the antenna module, resealing the base to prevent future water ingress, and clearing error messages, which resolved the issues. Regular inspection for water damage and proper sealing during repairs are recommended to prevent similar problems.

Latest service was at 98000km. The FM signal issues turned out to be related to water damage in the antenna assembly. After inspection, the technician found corrosion at the antenna base where water had seeped in. The poor signal quality and error messages were direct results of this damage. The repair involved replacing the entire antenna module and its connections, plus resealing the base to prevent future water ingress. Since the fix, radio reception is crystal clear and all error messages have cleared from the infotainment system. The repair cost was 320€ including parts and labor. This seems to be a known weak point that can affect radio performance in these models.

Thanks for the update on your T-Cross antenna repair. My T-Roc had very similar issues with water damage to the antenna system. The repair approach sounds identical, these VW models seem to share the same vulnerability to moisture at the antenna base. The repair cost is in line with what I paid, though slightly higher. The good news is that proper sealing during reinstallation should prevent future issues. Since my repair, I have not experienced any signal strength problems or error messages, even during heavy rain. One suggestion for other owners experiencing static noise or poor radio reception: check for early signs of corrosion around the antenna base during routine maintenance. A simple visual inspection can catch these issues before they cause complete signal failure or damage to the vehicle electronics. Keep monitoring the signal quality over the next few months. If you notice any degradation in reception, have the seals checked promptly to prevent moisture from compromising the new antenna booster components.

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies. Just wanted to provide a final update after several months of use following the antenna repair on my T-Cross. The FM signal strength has remained excellent with no return of the error messages. The water sealing fix and new antenna module were definitely worth the 320€ investment. The signal amplifier is working perfectly and there is zero radio interference even in areas where I previously had major reception issues. For anyone else facing similar problems with their infotainment system, I strongly recommend getting the antenna assembly checked for water damage. The corrosion can spread if left untreated and potentially cause more expensive damage to other electronic components. The key learnings from my experience: Water damage at the antenna base can severely impact reception, Proper diagnosis by a qualified technician is essential, Complete antenna module replacement may be needed, Proper sealing during reinstallation prevents future issues, Regular inspection of the antenna area during maintenance is advisable This seems to be a common weak point, but thankfully the fix is straightforward once correctly diagnosed.

Having dealt with static noise and car radio problems on my 2020 VW T-Roc, I can relate to your situation. I have some experience with vehicle electronics issues, particularly radio interference problems. The symptoms you describe match what I experienced, poor radio reception and system errors. After multiple failed attempts to reset the infotainment system, I took it to a workshop. Their diagnostic revealed a defective antenna amplifier and a damaged ground connection. The total repair came to 255€, including parts and labor. The fix involved: Replacing the faulty antenna module, Checking all ground connections, Testing the signal amplifier, Clearing error codes, Complete system reset Before suggesting specific solutions, could you provide: Exact error messages showing on the screen, Whether the issue started suddenly or gradually, If the problem occurs with all audio sources or just radio, If you notice the issues more in certain areas or consistently, Whether there were any recent repairs or modifications This information would help determine if your T-Cross is experiencing the same root cause as my T-Roc did.
