VW T-Cross DPF Failure Causing Power Loss & Dark Smoke

Looking for advice on my VW T-Cross diesel with DPF issues. Warning light came on recently alongside power loss and dark smoke while accelerating. Car feels sluggish and theres a strong exhaust smell. Previous mechanic experience wasnt great, so hoping to hear from others who dealt with similar particulate filter problems. Currently at 107000km on my 2019 model. Has anyone experienced pressure sensor warnings like this? What repair costs should I expect and any trusted mechanic advice would be appreciated.

Had similar symptoms on my 2016 VW Tiguan diesel. The exhaust back pressure sensor was failing, causing DPF regeneration issues and triggering the emission control system warnings. The main symptoms matched exactly: power loss during acceleration, dark smoke, and that distinct exhaust smell. The particulate filter was getting clogged because the system wasnt properly measuring exhaust flow. After diagnosing, it showed low pressure readings from the sensor. The repair involved replacing both the pressure sensor and cleaning the DPF. Its a serious issue that needs prompt attention, leaving it unfixed can lead to complete DPF failure and potential engine damage. The job requires specialized diagnostic equipment to properly test the exhaust system and verify the repair. Worth noting the pressure sensor itself is separate from the DPF unit, so if caught early enough you might avoid full DPF replacement. A warning about cheaper fixes: some shops might suggest sensor cleaning only, but if the DPF is already compromised, this wont solve the underlying problem. The complete repair should include system diagnostics, sensor replacement, and DPF cleaning or replacement if necessary.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I had nearly identical problems with my T-Cross last winter, reduced power, diesel exhaust issues, the works. The low pressure readings from the sensor definitely match what I experienced too. Did you remember roughly what the final repair cost was? Also curious if youve had any similar DPF regeneration problems since the fix? Mine has been running fine after the repair, but always good to hear long-term outcomes from others. The repair costs can vary quite a bit depending on whether you need just the sensor or full DPF replacement, so it would be helpful to know what your shop ended up charging for the work.

After getting it properly diagnosed and fixed at the shop, my total repair bill came to 245€ for replacing the faulty exhaust back pressure sensor. The low pressure readings were causing all those DPF regeneration problems, but thankfully the particulate filter itself was still in good condition and didnt need replacement. Its been running perfectly since the repair, no more diesel exhaust issues or warning lights. The exhaust system is working as intended now that the pressure sensor is giving accurate readings. That sluggish performance and dark smoke completely disappeared after the fix. The key was catching it early before the faulty sensor could cause permanent damage to the DPF. Some shops might push for complete filter replacement, but if the pressure sensor is the root cause, replacing just that component can solve the problem. A proper diagnosis makes all the difference in avoiding unnecessary repairs. Nice to hear your T-Cross is also running well after the fix. These pressure sensor issues seem fairly common on VW diesels, but they're manageable when addressed promptly.

Thanks for the advice. Finally got my T-Cross sorted after visiting a certified diesel specialist. The total repair came to 280€, slightly more than expected but worth every cent. The mechanic found the exhaust pressure sensor was failing, causing the DPF regeneration cycles to malfunction. They replaced the sensor and did a thorough cleaning of the particulate filter. The diagnostic equipment showed the DPF itself was still in decent condition, just needed proper maintenance. Its been about 3 weeks since the repair and the difference is remarkable. No more warning lights, power loss is gone, and the exhaust system is working perfectly. The mechanic explained everything clearly and showed me the faulty parts, which was refreshing after my previous poor experience. For anyone facing similar DPF issues, dont wait around hoping it will fix itself. Getting it checked early saved me from needing a complete filter replacement, which would have cost significantly more.
