VW Taigo A/C Failure: Compressor Troubleshooting Guide

Looking for advice on my air conditioning problem. My 2021 VW Taigo (gas, 122547km) stopped cooling completely. The A/C system wont engage at all and the diagnostic shows an error code. I suspect the compressor might be failing. Has anyone dealt with something similar? Any recommendations on what to check first before heading to the shop? Last mechanic visit wasnt great, so hoping to get some insights from fellow VW owners about common HVAC system issues like this.

Summary of the thread

The conversation revolves around a 2021 VW Taigo experiencing air conditioning failure, with the system not engaging and showing an error code. The suspected cause is a failing compressor, but advice from others suggests checking for refrigerant leaks, pressure sensor issues, and ensuring the A/C belt is intact. Solutions include professional diagnostics to identify leaks, replacing faulty components like the pressure sensor or relay switch, and recharging the refrigerant. Proper diagnosis and repair are emphasized to avoid unnecessary costs and ensure the system functions correctly.

Had a similar issue with my 2018 VW T-Roc. The A/C system stopped engaging completely, and it turned out to be more than just a compressor problem. First signs matched yours, no cooling and error codes. The diagnosis revealed a refrigerant leak near the pressure sensor, which triggered a safety shutdown of the system. The pressure switch was cutting power to prevent compressor damage due to low refrigerant levels. The repair involved: Testing the A/C system with pressure gauges, Locating the refrigerant leak using UV dye, Replacing the faulty pressure sensor, Installing a new relay switch, Recharging the system with fresh refrigerant This was a serious issue that required professional attention. Without proper pressure in the A/C system, running the compressor could have caused permanent damage. The relay switch and pressure sensor replacement were essential to restore proper function. Before going to a shop, check if the A/C belt is intact and turning. Listen for clicking when the A/C button is pressed, this indicates if the compressor clutch is engaging. But given the error code, professional diagnostic equipment will likely be needed.

Thanks for sharing your experience, this is exactly what happened to my Taigo last summer. The belt tensioner was worn and the A/C compressor wasnt engaging properly either. Professional repair was definitely needed. How much did the complete fix end up costing you? And has the air conditioning system worked fine since the repair?

Thanks for following up. After my last mechanic visit, the air conditioning issue was completely resolved. The undervoltage problem causing the compressor shut off has been fixed, cost me 240€ for parts and labor. The repair was actually simpler than initially feared. The AC relay was replaced as a precaution since the system showed electrical irregularities. The pressure switch and wiring connection to the compressor were also checked during diagnosis, but these components were functioning properly. The air conditioning system has worked flawlessly for several months now. No more issues with the compressor engagement or cooling performance. Getting it properly diagnosed and repaired was definitely worth it to avoid potentially bigger problems down the line.

I went to a local certified shop after getting great advice here. The diagnosis confirmed a failing belt tensioner and compressor issues in my HVAC system. The mechanic found low refrigerant levels causing the safety shutdown, exactly as suggested. Total repair came to 780€: New belt tensioner assembly, Compressor repair, Refrigerant recharge, System pressure test Took about 4 hours to complete but the A/C system works perfectly now. No more error codes or engagement problems. Much better experience than my previous mechanic who just wanted to replace the entire compressor without proper diagnosis. Really glad I asked here first and knew what to expect. Saved me from unnecessary repairs and helped me better understand the actual problem.
