VW Taigo Lighting System Goes Haywire

My dashboard lights are showing electrical issues and the car lighting system seems faulty. The light switch appears to malfunction since the lights out of nowhere turn on by themselves. There is an error code stored but I had a bad experience with my last mechanic and want to get some second opinions before going back. Has anyone experienced similar problems with their tail lights or car lighting system? Car is a 2022 VW Taigo gasoline with 30622km.

Summary of the thread

The VW Taigo's lighting system was malfunctioning, with dashboard lights showing electrical issues and lights turning on unexpectedly. The problem was traced to a faulty connection in the main light switch assembly, not the wiring harness or fuse box. The solution involved repairing the loose connection and testing all lighting circuits, which resolved the issue. Since the car was under warranty, the repair was covered at no cost, and all lighting functions returned to normal.

Had the same electrical problem with my 2019 VW T-Cross last winter. The dashboard lights started flickering and the tail lights would turn on out of nowhere, even with the light switch in the off position. The issue turned out to be a damaged wiring harness connector near the fuse box. The main plug had corroded terminals and was causing intermittent electrical connections. This affected multiple lighting circuits since the connector serves as a central hub for various electrical components. The repair involved replacing the complete wiring harness connector and cleaning all terminal points. While not extremely complex, it required specialized diagnostic equipment to properly trace the fault. This was a serious issue that needed immediate attention since faulty lighting systems can create dangerous driving conditions. The symptoms match your Taigo exactly, unusual activation of lights and dashboard warnings. Would strongly recommend having it checked by a certified shop that can properly diagnose electrical systems. Trying to fix electrical problems without proper diagnosis often leads to more extensive damage. A quick check of the fuse box might reveal obvious issues, but given the similarities to my case, it likely needs professional diagnostic testing.

Thanks for detailing your experience with the faulty wiring harness. Your description matches my case with the dashboard lights and electrical issues perfectly. Would you mind sharing how much the repair ended up costing? Always good to have a ballpark figure before heading to the shop. Also curious if your dimmer switch and other car lighting functions have been working properly since the fix? Sometimes these electrical problems can be tricky and show up again months later. My VW Taigo is still under warranty but Id rather avoid multiple trips to the dealership if possible.

I followed up with a certified mechanic and got the issue resolved last week. The faulty light switch was causing the unusual electrical issues, specifically a loose cable connection at the automotive switch assembly. The repair was straightforward once properly diagnosed, they fixed the connection and tested all lighting circuits through the fuse box to ensure everything was working correctly. Total cost came to 95€ for the repair, which included diagnostic testing and fixing the defective connection. Much less expensive than replacing the entire wiring harness I initially worried about. All lighting functions, including the tail lights, dimmer, and dashboard indicators, have been working flawlessly since the repair. No recurring issues or unusual activations. The mechanic mentioned these electrical problems rarely return once the root cause is properly addressed. Since your Taigo is under warranty, the dealer should cover similar repairs at no cost. Just make sure they thoroughly test the complete lighting system and automotive switch connections during diagnosis.

The mechanic visit went better than expected. I took my Taigo to a certified VW service center after getting feedback here about similar electrical problems. The technician found the issue quickly, a faulty connection in the main light switch assembly that was causing the unusual activation of lights. The diagnostic testing confirmed no problems with the wiring harness or fuse box. They repaired the loose connection and ran a full check of all car lighting circuits. Since the car is still under warranty, I paid nothing for the fix. All lighting functions work perfectly now, no more unusual activations or dashboard warnings. The dimmer switch and tail lights operate normally. Really glad I got input here before assuming the worst about extensive electrical repairs. The whole process took about 2 hours and saved me from jumping to expensive conclusions about wiring problems. The service center documented everything properly for the warranty claim. Much better experience than my previous mechanic who wanted to replace multiple components without proper diagnosis.
