VW Taigo Mirror Heaters Failed Despite Low Mileage

Looking for advice on my rearview mirror heater problem. The temperature control for both side mirrors stopped working and my diagnostic shows an error code. Want to avoid getting ripped off at the mechanic after my last bad experience there. Car is fairly new, 2022 VW Taigo with gasoline engine, only 10688km on it. Has anyone dealt with similar heater element issues on their mirrors? What was the actual problem and repair cost in your case?

Had the same issue on my 2019 VW T-Cross. The rearview mirror heating failed during cold weather, triggering the error code. Initial checks revealed a faulty wiring connection where the harness meets the mirror assembly. After thorough testing at the garage, we found the heater element itself was working, but the main problem was a damaged cable connector in the door panel. The connection had corroded due to water ingress. This is actually a common vehicle safety concern since mirror defrosting is essential for proper visibility. The fix involved replacing the entire wire harness assembly and resealing the mirror mount to prevent future moisture problems. Not a major repair in terms of components, but accessing the area required careful door panel removal. The temperature control system worked flawlessly after the repair. For your Taigo, I recommend getting the connector points checked first, often the issue stems from the wiring rather than the heating elements themselves. Since your car is newer, this could even be covered under warranty if no physical damage is involved.

Thanks for the detailed response about your T-Cross mirror issue. Good to know about the wiring being the culprit rather than the heater element itself. My Taigo has started showing the same symptoms, no response from the temperature control when I try to defrost the mirrors. Since you mentioned the wire harness replacement, would you remember the repair cost in your case? Also curious if youve had any electrical fault issues since the fix? Want to get an idea of what Im potentially looking at cost-wise and if this tends to be a one-time fix or a recurring car electronics problem.

Really glad I can update on this. Took my T-Cross to the mechanic last week and the winter driving issue with the mirror heating is completely resolved. The electrical fault turned out to be much simpler than my initial repair, just a loose plug connection that needed proper reseating and securing. The repair cost was only 95€, far less than my original wire harness replacement. The temperature control system has been working perfectly since then, especially during cold weather conditions. No recurring problems at all with the mirror defrosting function or any other electrical issues. This shows how important it is to get a proper diagnosis, what seemed like a major wiring problem at first ended up being a straightforward connector fix. For your Taigo, definitely worth having them check the simple connections before assuming worst-case scenarios.

Going to the mechanic today was actually a relief. After reading about your experience, I pushed back when they initially suggested replacing the entire wire harness. Asked them to check the basic connections first, just like you mentioned. Turns out the electrical fault in my Taigo was similar to your second repair, just a loose connection in the rearview mirror assembly. The mechanic found some moisture had created minor corrosion at the contact points. They cleaned the connectors, reseated everything properly, and applied some protective coating. Total bill came to 120€ for diagnostic and repair work. The heater element is now responding perfectly to the temperature control. Really glad I asked here first, saved me from potentially unnecessary expensive repairs. The car mirror system is working like new again. Will update if any issues come back, but for now, looks like we had nearly identical problems with a simple fix. Thanks for helping me avoid getting overcharged for this vehicle safety feature repair.
