VW Taigo Transmission Lockup: Sensor vs Major Repair

Thanks for sharing that detailed repair experience. My car currently has 140083km on the odometer. The transmission issue appeared suddenly during my last drive, no warning signs beforehand. When attempting to shift, there is a distinct clicking sound followed by a metallic clunk. As for diagnostic codes, I will need to get another scan done since the first readout wasnt shared with me by the shop. The fact that your gear shifter symptoms were resolved by replacing the control unit gives me hope this might not require extensive transmission repair. I will have my mechanic specifically check the transmission sensor and control unit based on your experience. The 1000€ repair cost is much more manageable than what I was fearing for a full transmission rebuild.

Thanks for providing those additional details about your Taigo. The clicking and clunking sounds you describe are very similar to what I experienced with my T-Cross before the repair. Those noises typically indicate the automatic transmission control unit is failing to properly engage the parking lock mechanism. The sudden onset of the problem also matches my experience, my transmission sensor issues appeared without warning during a routine drive. At your mileage (mine was around 135000km), control unit failures are not uncommon in these models. Something to note: after my transmission repair, I learned these control units can sometimes fail due to voltage fluctuations. Having the battery and charging system checked might be worthwhile while diagnosing the transmission failure. Since youre getting similar symptoms at a comparable mileage point, Im even more confident youre dealing with the same control unit issue rather than internal transmission damage. Still, getting those specific error codes will help confirm this. Make sure your mechanic checks both the transmission sensor signals and the communication between the control unit and park brake system. Keep us updated on what the new diagnostic scan reveals. If it is indeed the control unit, you should be back on the road fairly quickly once the parts arrive.

Thanks everyone for the helpful feedback. After getting a second diagnostic scan, the error codes confirmed a faulty transmission control unit, just as suggested. The codes specifically pointed to communication failures between the gear shifter and transmission sensor systems. My mechanic ordered the replacement control unit which cost 850€ plus labor. They also tested the charging system as recommended and found it working normally. The repair took about 6 hours total, and the transmission is now shifting perfectly with no more clunking sounds or gear linkage issues. The neutral position indicator and gear shifter are both responding correctly, and the check engine light has stayed off. Its been 2 weeks since the repair and no transmission issues have returned. The total repair ended up being 1100€, slightly more than expected but still much better than a full transmission rebuild. For anyone else experiencing similar transmission sensor problems, definitely have your control unit checked first before assuming the worst. Getting those specific diagnostic codes really helped pinpoint the exact issue.

I had a very similar transmission issue with my 2021 VW T-Cross last year. With some experience working on VWs, I recognized the symptoms immediately, stuck shifter, transmission sensor problems, and those troubling check engine codes related to the automatic transmission. After thorough diagnosis, the workshop found the transmission control unit was defective, causing communication issues with the parking lock and position sensors. The repair involved replacing the control unit and recalibrating the entire transmission system. Total cost was 1000€, including parts and labor. The symptoms you describe match my experience exactly, especially the transmission failure warnings and shifting problems. It sounds like you might be dealing with the same underlying control unit issue rather than mechanical transmission repair needs. Could you share: Current mileage on your Taigo, Whether you notice any unusual sounds when shifting, If the problem appeared suddenly or developed gradually, The specific error codes from your diagnostic scan This information would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced. The good news is that while transmission issues can be scary, sensor and control unit problems are often more straightforward to fix than mechanical transmission failures.
