VW Taos Cruise Control Failure: Common Causes Revealed

Help needed with cruise control malfunction on 2023 VW Taos. Getting error codes but not sure what to check first. System completely stopped working without warning. Had anyone similar issues and got it fixed? Most interested in common causes, could it be related to the brake light or speed sensor? Looking for tips on what the workshop found and fixed in your cases. Not planning DIY repairs, just want to understand the likely culprits before heading to service.

Had the exact same issue on my 2021 VW T-Cross last month. As someone with some basic car maintenance experience, I initially thought it might be a blown fuse, but it turned out to be more complex. The cruise control system suddenly stopped working during a drive, and the dashboard light started flashing irregularly. After checking the basic stuff like fuses and brake light functionality, I took it to a workshop. They diagnosed it as a faulty wiring connection between the speed sensor and the cruise control module. The mechanic found a damaged wire harness connector that was causing intermittent signal loss. Total repair cost was 95€, which covered the connector replacement and diagnostic work. The fix took about an hour and the cruise control has worked perfectly since. What check engine codes are you getting specifically? Also, have you noticed any other electrical issues or dashboard lights? The speed sensor often triggers multiple symptoms when failing, so this info would help identify if your issue is similar to what I experienced. Worth mentioning that these systems are interconnected, a faulty brake light switch can also cause cruise control failure, but that usually shows different error codes. Could you share your Taos trim level and engine specs? This might help narrow down the potential causes.

Just had it checked at the latest service at 64409km and they found it was a steering wheel clock spring issue causing intermittent signal loss to the cruise control module. Similar error codes appeared in my case. The speed sensor readings were fine but the command signals from the steering wheel controls werent reaching the system properly. Workshop confirmed this is a known point of failure affecting the cruise control. Total repair was 320€ including parts and labor.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Actually, that clock spring issue matches what happened with my T-Cross a while later. After my initial speed sensor repair, the cruise control started acting up again around 70000km, showing similar symptoms to what you described. The intermittent signal loss from a faulty clock spring can be tricky to diagnose since it affects multiple steering wheel functions. When the workshop did the repair on mine, they mentioned the clock spring failure often gets mistaken for pedal switch or throttle position sensor problems because the symptoms overlap. The repair cost on my car was about 290€, so pretty close to what you paid. Good thing you got it properly diagnosed, replacing just the speed sensor like in my first repair wouldnt have fixed the underlying clock spring problem. For anyone else reading this thread: if your cruise control stops working and you get similar error codes, make sure the workshop checks the clock spring, especially if the steering wheel controls show any inconsistent behavior.

Workshop confirmed this is a known point of failure affecting the cruise control. Total repair was 320€ including parts and labor. My throttle position sensor and pedal switch were both tested and working normally. The technician mentioned these components often get blamed first, but checking the clock spring connection should be a priority when cruise control fails. The fuse box was also inspected but all fuses were intact. Really glad to have this resolved, the system works perfectly now. Going to mark this thread as solved since we identified the common fault. Thanks everyone for the input on diagnosing cruise control issues. The feedback helped me better understand what to discuss with the workshop.
