VW Taos Misfire Issues Cause Rough Acceleration

Has anyone dealt with misfires on their 2021 Taos? My engine runs rough and jerks during acceleration, plus the check engine light just came on. Power feels noticeably reduced. Would appreciate hearing about similar experiences, especially what repairs were needed and how your workshop diagnosed the issue. Currently suspecting combustion misfire but want to confirm before taking it to the shop.

As someone with moderate experience working on VWs, I dealt with very similar symptoms on my 2019 Tiguan last winter. The cylinder misfire and rough idle turned out to be caused by a faulty injection valve. The symptoms matched exactly what you describe, reduced throttle response, engine jerking during acceleration, and the check engine light. Initially thought it might be a bad ignition coil or spark plug issue, but diagnostic testing revealed the problematic injector. The workshop performed: Full diagnostic scan, Injector testing, Replacement of the defective injector, System reset and testing Total repair cost was 515€ including parts and labor. After replacement, the engine ran smoothly again with normal power delivery and no more warning lights. To better assist with your situation, could you share: Current mileage, Whether the check engine light is steady or flashing, Any recent maintenance history, If the problem occurs more when the engine is cold or warm, Which fuel type/grade you typically use This information would help determine if your Taos is experiencing the same injector issue or potentially something else causing the cylinder misfire.

Thanks for sharing that experience. My Taos has 112256km and just had its annual service last month. The check engine light started flashing yesterday along with the rough idle and power loss. Initially I thought the fuel injector might be at fault, but the problem seems worse when the engine is cold and improves slightly after warming up. This makes me wonder if its more likely to be an ignition coil issue rather than injection. My diagnostic scan shows cylinder misfire codes. I use only premium fuel and change it according to maintenance schedule, so I doubt its fuel quality related. Would installing new ignition coils be a good first step before checking the injectors?

Thanks for those additional details. The symptoms you describe, especially the cold start rough idle that improves with warmth, strongly point toward an ignition system issue rather than fuel delivery. This matches my experience when I encountered similar problems with my Taos. After dealing with my misfire issues, I learned that ignition coils and spark plugs often deteriorate gradually, with problems becoming most noticeable during cold starts. The flashing check engine light specifically indicates active misfires, which in my case was fixed by replacing both the ignition coils and spark plugs as a set. Given your mileage, starting with the ignition system is a logical approach. The repair cost me about 380€ for parts and labor, significantly less than injector work. Plus, even if it turns out to be something else, these components would need replacement soon anyway as preventive maintenance. Quick troubleshooting tip: If you can identify which cylinder is misfiring from the diagnostic codes, try swapping that ignition coil with another cylinder. If the misfire follows the coil to the new location, you have confirmed the faulty component before investing in repairs.

Thanks everyone. After reading the responses and doing some additional research, I decided to start with checking the ignition coils since the symptoms match what others experienced. Just got back from the shop and they confirmed my suspicions, two failing ignition coils were causing the engine misfiring and rough idle issues. Had all the coils and spark plugs replaced as preventive maintenance since they were due anyway. Total cost was 395€ for parts and labor. The check engine light is now off and the engine runs perfectly smooth again, even during cold starts. No more jerking during acceleration either. Really appreciate the advice about the cold start symptoms pointing toward ignition system rather than fuel system problems. Saved me from potentially spending more time and money checking the fuel injectors first. Will definitely keep an eye on how the engine runs going forward, but for now the issue seems fully resolved.
