VW Tiguan check engine light comes on repeatedly at certain intervals, possibly defective EGR valve?

Hi everyone, I have a problem with my 2015 VW Tiguan diesel (219876 km). The symptoms are: Check Engine light on, engine stalls on its own, loss of power, rough engine, strong exhaust smell and jerking at idle. Could this be a problem with the EGR valve? What experiences have you had with this and how did it go with your mechanic? Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A 2015 VW Tiguan diesel is experiencing issues such as the check engine light turning on, engine stalling, loss of power, rough idling, strong exhaust smell, and jerking. These symptoms suggest a potential problem with the EGR valve, which may be faulty or stuck. A similar case with a 2013 VW Passat diesel was resolved by cleaning and replacing the EGR valve, leading to improved engine performance and emissions. The suggested solution is to have the EGR valve inspected and possibly replaced by a mechanic.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hi, this sounds very much like a problem with the EGR valve. I had similar symptoms with my 2013 VW Passat diesel: check engine light, engine would sometimes stall, loss of power and jerking. My mechanic confirmed that the EGR valve was faulty and stuck. The valve was cleaned and finally replaced. After that, the engine and exhaust system ran perfectly again. This was a serious matter, especially because of the loss of power and the environmental impact of the poor exhaust emissions. Good luck with the repair! Greetings

Hi, that sounds exactly like my problem. Do you remember how much you paid for the repair? And were there any other problems afterwards? Thank you! Greetings

Hey, yes, that sounds familiar. In my case, it was also the EGR valve that was broken and jammed. After I went to my mechanic, the "functional fault in the EGR valve" was finally solved. The repair cost me a total of €355. Since then, the engine has been running smoothly again and there have been no further problems. Hope this helps you! Greetings

Hey, thanks for the info! That really helps me. I took my Tiguan to my mechanic straight away and it was actually the EGR valve. He replaced it and everything ran smoothly again. The cost was about the same for me, a little less, I think, because he gave me a small discount. Afterwards, the engine ran without any problems and no further difficulties arose. Thanks again for your support! Greetings
