VW Tiguan Starting Issues, Camshaft Sensor Warning

My Tiguan is struggling with poor starts and lacks power. The check engine light came on, and I suspect the camshaft sensor might be failing. Anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Running a 2008 2.0 TDI with 35856km. Last mechanic visit left me skeptical, so looking for honest feedback on repair costs and trusted workshops. Has anyone replaced their automotive sensor recently and can share what to expect?

The symptoms you describe with your Tiguan match exactly what happened with my 2011 Volkswagen Touareg TDI. The rough idling and power loss were clear indicators of camshaft position sensor issues. A failing camshaft sensor typically causes these problems because it disrupts the precise timing needed between the crankshaft and camshaft. When the sensor starts failing, the engine control unit receives incorrect timing data, leading to poor performance and starting issues. In my case, the fix involved replacing the camshaft sensor and checking all related wiring connections. The timing issues were causing significant problems with the engine management system. While not immediately dangerous, leaving it unfixed can lead to more severe engine damage. The repair process revealed both a faulty sensor and corroded wiring connections. The mechanic also found that moisture had damaged the sensor plug connection, which is a common issue on these engines. This is considered a moderate repair job, not the most complex but definitely requires proper diagnostic equipment and expertise. The check engine light is a clear warning sign that should not be ignored, as timing-related issues can escalate quickly if left unattended.

Thanks for sharing those details about your Touareg issues. I had practically identical problems with my 2009 Tiguan, stalling engine issues and that annoying check engine light that kept coming on. My mechanic also traced it to a bad camshaft position sensor. Would you mind sharing what the total repair cost was for you? Just wondering how it compares to what I paid. Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix? After my sensor replacement, I noticed the rough idling completely disappeared, but I am curious if you experienced any other issues pop up related to the timing system.

Following up on your questions about repair costs, I just had my camshaft sensor issue resolved last week. The total came to 95€, which covered fixing the faulty cable and plug connection. Much more reasonable than a complete sensor replacement. Since addressing the defective camshaft sensor connection, my Touareg has been running perfectly. The stalling engine problems disappeared completely, and the timing issues that were causing the rough idle are now gone. The check engine light hasnt returned either, which confirms the automotive sensor repair was successful. No additional timing-related problems have surfaced. The engine performance is back to normal, with smooth acceleration and reliable starts. This kind of repair typically resolves the issue completely when done correctly, especially when the root cause is found to be in the wiring rather than the sensor itself. Its good to hear your Tiguan is also running better after the fix. These sensors are critical for proper engine timing, so addressing problems promptly helps prevent more serious engine complications down the line.

Thanks everyone for the helpful insights. Just wanted to close this thread by sharing how my repair went. Took it to a different mechanic who actually found the issue quickly. The camshaft position sensor was failing, but there was also a minor wiring issue that was contributing to the engine misfire. The total repair came to 180€ for parts and labor. The mechanic showed me the worn sensor and explained how it was causing the timing issues. They also cleaned up some corrosion around the connector which I guess was making things worse. Been about 2 weeks since the fix and the engine runs great now. No more rough starts or power loss. The check engine light has stayed off and the idle is perfectly smooth. Definitely worth getting it sorted before it caused bigger problems.
