VW Tiguan Tailgate Sensor Failure Causing Opening Issues

My automatic tailgate started acting up recently. The door only opens halfway and the computer shows an error. The main issue seems to be with the sensor wiring or hall sensor. Has anyone dealt with this before? The last mechanic visit was pretty disappointing so Id like to know what to expect and potential repair costs. Running a 2015 VW Tiguan Diesel with 130558km on the clock. Any tips or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Had the same issue on a 2012 VW Touareg TDI. The automatic tailgate problem usually points to a sensor fault in the lifting mechanism. The vehicle sensor was reporting incorrect position data, causing the tailgate to stop midway. The repair involved testing the hall sensor connections and replacing damaged sensor wiring near the tailgate hinges. The wiring tends to wear out from repeated opening and closing movements. In my case, water had also infiltrated the connector housing, causing corrosion. This turned out to be a common issue that needed specialized diagnostic equipment to properly identify the faulty components. The mechanic had to remove the tailgate trim panels to access and replace the damaged parts. While not a major mechanical problem, it required careful handling due to the complex electronics involved. To prevent future issues, they also applied additional waterproofing to the new sensor connections and adjusted the tailgate alignment. The open tailgate function worked perfectly after the repair. Worth noting this is not a quick fix, the workshop needed several hours to complete the job properly.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I recently faced similar problems with my 2015 Tiguan. The tailgate motor would stop out of nowhere and the sensor fault light kept coming on. Fixed it about 3 months ago. Just wondering, what did the repair end up costing you? Also, has everything been working smoothly since then? My automatic tailgate has been functioning perfectly after the fix, but Id like to know if I should expect any other related issues down the line.

Had mine fixed last week actually. The total repair came to 95€, which covered fixing a faulty connection in the hall sensor wiring harness. The electrical sensor was showing incorrect readings due to a loose plug connection near the tailgate motor. The sensor calibration process after the repair was crucial, the mechanic made sure all movement points were properly set. Since then, the open tailgate function has been working flawlessly. No more unusual stops or error messages. Based on what the technician explained, once these electrical sensor issues are properly addressed, they rarely come back. Just keep the hinge area clean and avoid using pressure washers directly on the tailgate seals to prevent future moisture-related problems.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. After reading about similar cases, I took my Tiguan to a different workshop last week. The mechanic found that the power tailgate system had a damaged sensor wiring harness and corroded electrical sensor connections. The repair took about 4 hours and cost 380€ total. They replaced the faulty components, recalibrated the tailgate motor, and added extra waterproofing around the connections. The automatic tailgate now works perfectly, opens and closes smoothly without any error messages. Much better experience than my first mechanic visit where they just cleaned the contacts and charged me for a temporary fix. If anyone else runs into similar issues, definitely get the sensor wiring properly checked by someone who knows these systems.
