VW Tiguan Transmission Failure Signs & Starting Issues

My Tiguan is having transmission issues and the engine wont start. Its a 2018 diesel with 114315km on the clock. The automatic transmission seems to be stuck and wont properly engage in park position. The check engine light is on and the gear shifter feels loose when moving between positions. Sometimes the transmission slips while driving. Already got error codes read at a shop but not happy with their diagnosis. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms or can recommend how to approach this? Getting worried about potential transmission failure and repair costs.

My 2015 VW Passat diesel had nearly identical transmission issues. The symptoms strongly point to a failing transmission sensor combined with a potential shift lock problem. The main signs match exactly: loose gear shifter, transmission slips, and inability to properly engage park position. The check engine light triggered due to the transmission control unit detecting these irregularities. In my case, the issue was a defective transmission control module combined with a worn gear linkage. The transmission sensor was sending incorrect signals, causing erratic shifting behavior. This prevented proper communication between the transmission and engine control units. This is a serious issue that requires immediate attention. Continued driving risks complete transmission failure. The repair involves: Replacing the faulty transmission sensors, Recalibrating the control module, Adjusting the gear linkage mechanism, Full transmission diagnostic scan While waiting for repairs, avoid shifting between gears when the vehicle is moving and minimize driving if possible. A certified transmission specialist should perform a complete diagnostic before proceeding with repairs. These symptoms typically indicate an electrical/mechanical combination problem rather than internal transmission damage, which is somewhat positive news regarding the scope of repairs needed.

Thanks for sharing your experience. My 2018 Tiguan had similar transmission issues last month. The gear shifter also felt loose and I was worried about complete transmission failure too. The transmission repair actually turned out to be less complicated than expected, they found the main issue was a faulty transmission sensor and worn linkage bushings. Would you mind sharing how much the repair ended up costing? Also curious if youve had any automatic transmission problems since getting it fixed? Really helpful to compare experiences since these transmission issues can be pretty stressful to deal with.

After taking my Passat to a certified transmission specialist, the diagnosis confirmed my suspicions about the transmission sensor and control unit being the root cause. The park brake position sensor was completely defective, causing the erratic shifting and park engagement problems. The repair was straightforward, they replaced the faulty transmission control unit and recalibrated the entire system. Total cost came to 1000€ for parts and labor. While not cheap, it was far less expensive than a complete transmission repair would have been. Since fixing the transmission issues six months ago, the car has performed flawlessly. The gear linkage engages smoothly, no more slipping between gears, and the park position locks securely every time. The transmission repair fully resolved all the symptoms I was experiencing. Getting the control unit replaced early likely prevented more serious transmission failure down the road. These automatic transmission problems can certainly be concerning, but addressing them promptly typically leads to the best outcome.

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies. I took my Tiguan to a transmission specialist last week. The mechanic found the neutral position sensor was faulty and the shift lock mechanism needed adjustment. The diagnostic scan revealed error codes related to the transmission control module. They replaced the sensor, recalibrated the system, and adjusted the linkage. Total repair cost was 850€, definitely better than needing a full transmission replacement. Been driving it for a week now and all the transmission issues are resolved. The gear shifts are smooth again, no more slipping, and the shifter feels properly secured when moving between positions. Really glad I got it checked out before risking complete transmission failure. The shop also did a full transmission fluid change while they had it apart. Said that should help prevent similar problems for a good while. Pretty relieved it wasnt as bad as I initially feared.
