VW Touareg Engine Overheating & Fan Issues

My engine keeps overheating and the check engine light is on. The radiator fan seems to be running inconsistently, which makes me suspect a failing fan motor or temperature control unit. Have others experienced similar cooling system issues? Looking for advice before heading back to the mechanic since my last repair experience was not great. Car details: 2020 VW Touareg, gas engine, 133021km.

I had a similar cooling system issue with my 2017 VW Tiguan. The radiator fan would run erratically, causing the engine to overheat during city driving. The check engine light pointed to a faulty fan control module, but the actual problem turned out to be more complex. The mechanic found that both the fan motor and temperature sensor were malfunctioning. The fan blade was also slightly warped, causing additional strain on the system. When a car overheating issue involves multiple components like this, its important to have a thorough diagnostic rather than just replacing parts one by one. The repair involved replacing the entire fan assembly and sensor unit. This was a serious repair that required several hours of labor since they had to partially dismantle the front end to access all components. After the fix, the cooling system worked perfectly and the check engine light cleared. Given your symptoms, especially the inconsistent fan operation, you might be facing a similar situation. Would recommend getting it checked soon, as continued overheating can lead to more severe engine damage.

Thank you for sharing your experience with the car radiator issues. Your case sounds very similar to mine. After reading about the fan blade and thermal switch problems you encountered, I will definitely get mine checked thoroughly. Did your cooling system stay stable after the repair? Would be great to know roughly how much you paid and if any other engine cooling problems came up since then. This would help me budget for the potential work needed.

Had the repair done about 6 months ago and the cooling system has been running perfectly since then. The radiator fan now operates consistently and the car overheating issues are completely resolved. The mechanic replaced the speed sensor which turned out to be the main culprit behind the erratic fan behavior. The total repair cost was 250€ including parts and labor, which was actually less than expected given the complexity of accessing the components. No other engine cooling problems have surfaced since the fix, and the thermal switch is working as intended. The check engine light hasnt returned either, so it seems they correctly identified and fixed the root cause. If your symptoms match what I experienced, you might be looking at a similar repair scope and cost. Getting it fixed sooner rather than later is definitely worth it to prevent any potential engine damage from persistent overheating.

Thanks for the helpful advice. I took my car to a different mechanic this time, and they found the exact problem. Similar to what you described, my radiator fan had multiple issues. The thermal switch was completely dead, and the fan motor was starting to fail. The repair cost came to 320€, slightly more than what you paid, but they also found and fixed a small coolant leak while they were in there. The car overheating problems are now completely gone, and the fan runs perfectly. No more strange fan noise or temperature control issues. What a relief to have this fixed properly. The check engine light is off, and the engine temperature stays steady even in stop-and-go traffic. Definitely worth getting a second opinion from a different mechanic this time around.
