VW Touareg Fuel Crisis: Bad Injectors Wreck Performance

My 2005 VW Touareg petrol is acting up lately. Fuel consumption has gone through the roof and the engine feels really weak. It keeps stalling when idle and spits out smoke during acceleration. Pretty sure it might be the injection system, but my last mechanic visit was a total disaster. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms on their Touareg? Mine has done 70184km and I need a reliable fix. Any recommendations on what to check first or experiences with reputable shops would be great.

Summary of the thread

A 2005 VW Touareg experienced increased fuel consumption, weak engine performance, stalling at idle, and smoke during acceleration, likely due to issues with the fuel injection system. Possible causes include faulty injector connections and corroded wiring, leading to inconsistent fuel delivery. Solutions involve checking engine error codes, testing fuel pressure, inspecting fuel injection connections, and possibly replacing or repairing the wiring harness. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent further engine damage and restore normal vehicle performance.

Had similar issues with a 2008 VW Tiguan 2.0 TSI. The symptoms pointed to fuel injection problems, and after thorough diagnostics, the issue was traced to faulty fuel injector connections and a degraded wiring harness. The maintenance revealed the connectors had significant corrosion, reducing power delivery to the injectors. This created inconsistent fuel spray patterns, leading to poor performance, excessive fuel consumption, and the smoking during acceleration. The stalling was directly linked to improper fuel atomization at idle. The repair required replacing the entire injection harness and cleaning the injector ports. This was a serious issue that could have led to complete engine failure if left unattended. Air and fuel delivery systems need proper maintenance to prevent such problems. Key checks before visiting a shop: Check engine error codes, Test fuel pressure, Inspect all visible fuel injection connections, Monitor fuel consumption data, Test engine performance under load A proper diagnosis should include fuel system pressure testing and electronic injector response measurements to confirm the exact source of the leak in the system.

Thanks for the detailed reply on the injection system issues. That sounds exactly like what I am experiencing with my Touareg. I had the exact same symptoms with the power loss and petrol consumption going crazy. Getting it checked next week. Could you share what the repair cost was in your case? Also wondering if you have had any other issues pop up since getting it fixed?

Glad the info was helpful. Got my injection system sorted at a shop last month, turned out to be a simple fix with a loose connection in the wiring. Total bill came to 95€ for the repair, which was mainly labor costs to track down and fix the faulty cable connection. The engine has been running perfectly since the maintenance was done. Fuel consumption is back to normal and the power delivery is smooth again. No more stalling at idle or smoke issues during acceleration. Regular petrol consumption is exactly where it should be for this engine type. Important to mention that catching these injection system problems early helps prevent bigger engine issues down the line. Since the repair, everything has been working as it should, no additional problems have shown up.

Just got back from the mechanic. You were spot on about the injection system. Turned out my car had similar issues with corroded connectors affecting the fuel delivery. The mechanic found the problem after running some tests on the fuel pressure and checking the wiring. Total repair cost came to 280€ which included cleaning the whole injection system and replacing some damaged wiring. More expensive than your repair but still worth it considering how the car runs now. The smoke is completely gone and the engine feels strong again. Fuel consumption dropped back to normal levels too. Best part is no more stalling at idle. The air and fuel mix seems perfect now. Amazing how such a small issue with the injection system can cause so many problems. Really glad I got it sorted before any serious engine damage happened.
