VW Touareg Multiple System Failures and Control Issues

My VW Touareg 2018 (gasoline) is showing multiple system errors and the cruise control stopped working completely. The steering wheel controls seem unresponsive and theres a malfunction warning in the instrument cluster. Already checked the error memory and found stored codes. Anyone dealt with similar symptoms and got them fixed? Particularly interested in whether this could be related to the throttle body or car electronics issues, and what repairs were needed to solve it. Would really appreciate hearing about your repair experiences and what the workshop found.

Had a similar issue with my VW Tiguan 2016 gasoline model. With some experience working on VW electronics, I can share what helped fix my situation. The symptoms were nearly identical, multiple system errors, faulty steering wheel controls, and cruise control malfunction warnings in the dashboard. After diagnosis, the problem turned out to be a damaged wiring connection in the steering wheel actuator system. The workshop found that moisture had affected one of the main connector plugs leading to the steering wheel controls, causing intermittent connection issues and triggering multiple car electronics errors. The repair involved cleaning the connectors and replacing a faulty wiring harness section. Total cost was 95€ and completely resolved the malfunction warnings. Before suggesting specific solutions, could you share: Have you noticed any correlation between weather conditions and the errors appearing? Are there any other electrical issues like inconsistent window controls or radio function? What specific error codes were stored in the system? This information would help determine if your issue matches the wiring problem I experienced or points to a different car electronics concern.

Thanks for sharing those details. After my latest service 2 months ago, everything worked fine until these errors started appearing. At 53464km, my Touareg never had similar issues before. I checked and yes, the errors seem to occur more frequently during wet weather. The radio and windows work perfectly fine though. The stored diagnostics codes are P0121 and U0401, which appear to be related to the throttle position sensor and communications malfunction. Your experience with the steering wheel actuator wiring sounds very similar to what Im experiencing. The workshop quoted 240€ for a full diagnostics check, but based on your feedback, I might ask them to specifically inspect the steering wheel wiring connections first.

Based on those error codes and weather-related symptoms, it definitely sounds like the same wiring issue I encountered in my VW. The P0121 and U0401 codes often appear together when theres a connection problem affecting multiple car electronics systems. The fact that your non-functional cruise control and steering wheel malfunction warnings started after exposure to moisture strongly suggests corroded or damaged wiring connections. In my case, water had seeped into the steering column connector, creating similar faulty system behaviors. 240€ seems high for initial diagnostics when the problem indicators match these common VW wiring issues. My suggestion would be to request a focused inspection of: Steering wheel wiring harness connections, Throttle position sensor connector, Ground connections near the steering column The repair should cost significantly less than replacing the entire throttle body or cruise control module. When my steering wheel actuator wiring was fixed, the car electronics returned to normal operation immediately and the error codes cleared. Let us know what the workshop finds. The symptoms and conditions match my experience so closely that I expect youll find similar wiring connection issues.

Thanks for the input. I wanted to update this thread with the final outcome in case others run into similar issues with their car electronics. Took it to the workshop yesterday and showed them the information about potential wiring problems. They found corroded connectors in the steering wheel wiring harness, exactly as suggested. The moisture damage was causing the throttle body sensor readings to fluctuate and the cruise control malfunction warnings. Total repair cost was 180€, which included cleaning all connectors, replacing one section of damaged wiring, and clearing the error codes. Much better than the initial 240€ diagnostic fee they quoted. All steering wheel controls are now working perfectly, no more malfunction warnings in the dash, and the cruise control is functioning normally again. Really glad I asked about this here first, saved both time and money by pointing the workshop in the right direction regarding the wiring issue rather than replacing expensive components. From my experience, anyone seeing similar symptoms should definitely get their steering column wiring connections checked first, especially if the problems show up in wet weather.
